Essential surfing gear for surfing in Santa Teresa
When it comes to surfing in Santa Teresa, having the right gear is essential. Keep in mind, organized trips or surfcamps will usually provide surfboards and a rash guard. Here are a few items to consider packing for your surfing trip:
Surfboard
This one is the most obvious on the list, but keeping it off the list will be unprofessional. If you’re looking to get into surfing and not sure whether you’ll like it or not, we recommend renting one for the trip. Depending on where you stay they might have rental options on the property, make sure to do your research first.
If you’re a more advanced surfer looking to surf all day, we recommend having at least two boards (or one versatile). Costa Rica has a variety of breaks and waves, having a quiver ready to go will allow you to surf whenever, wherever you want.
For the beginners out there that are going all in and taking there surfboards with them. Look for foamboards or longboards as these are more suitable for beginners. Also, don’t forget to check your airline’s extra baggage policy. Some airlines charge extra while some don’t (You don’t wnat to end up paying for the surfboard more than you should).
Rush Guard
This shirt-like garment provides sun protection and helps prevent irritation from the wax on your board. It might also provide some wind protection, depinding on the thincknes of the rush gurad.
Costa Rica is a tropical country, meaning that it’s hot all year round, even in the wet season. You don’t need to worry about getting cold in the water. If you’re sensitive to cold, the coldest hours are dusk and duan so you might want to avoid these times.
Sunscreen
Perhaps the most important one on the list. Protect your skin from the strong Costa Rican sun with a waterproof, reef-safe sunscreen. Head up, most of the modern sunscreens have dozens of harmfull chemicals, not only for you but for the environment as well.
Look for eco-friendly alternatives that are chemicals free and reef safe. Here are some examples, SunBum, All Good Sport Sunscreen and many more.
Surf Wax
Unless you want to challenge yourself with extra slippery surface, this sticky substance is applied to the deck of your surfboard to provide traction and prevent slipping.
The only thing to note here is that the type of surf wax has to be suitable for the water temperature, otherwise, it’ll melt.
Keep in mind, you will be in a surfing town for the most part so there are a plenty of options if you got stuck or forgott one of these itmes!
