Surf Lessons in Santa Teresa: Every Surf School Compared (2026)

Quiet beach with jungle headland on the Nicoya Peninsula near Cobano, Costa Rica

Taking surfing lessons in Santa Teresa is a great way to start your surfing journey or improve it if you already have some experince. Trust me as a self-taught surfer, you don’t want to be doing this alone.

There are around 20 surf schools in Santa Teresa, and from the beach they all look the same: soft-top boards, colorful rash guards and an instructor shouting “paddle, paddle, paddle!”. Picking one shouldn’t take an afternoon of scrolling Google Maps.

So I put every surf school I could find on one page: what they charge, where they teach, how many students they put on one instructor and who each one actually suits. If you want the bigger picture on the waves themselves, start with my Santa Teresa surf guide.

Full disclosure before we start: I haven’t taken a beginner lesson with any of these schools. I’ve been surfing for about 10 years and spent almost four months surfing here, so I didn’t need one.

But I have seen them the way a surfer in the lineup sees them: which beach they teach on, whether that beach suits beginners on the day, how they handle big swell and how quickly they treat their students. Where something comes from reviews rather than my own eyes, I say so.

How I Compared the Surf Schools

Every school on this page was checked against the same things, so you can compare them side by side:

  • Where they teach: the beach matters more than the logo on the rash guard (more on that below).
  • Group size: how many students they put on one instructor, as advertised.
  • Price: the direct price, from the school’s own website, WhatsApp or booking listing.
  • Extras: photos, video analysis, transport, packages, card or cash only.
  • Reviews: Google rating and number of reviews, plus the things reviewers keep repeating, good and bad.

Prices in Santa Teresa change every season. Everything here was last checked in October 2026. If something has changed, tell me so I can update it.

Prices are per person for a roughly 90-minute lesson, taken from the schools’ own sites or booking listings in October 2026. “Ask” means there’s no public price: message them on WhatsApp.

How Much Do Surf Lessons in Santa Teresa Cost?

Expect to pay around $60 to $80 per person for a 90-minute group lesson and $80 to $110 for a private one. Almost every school runs 90-minute sessions, and the board, leash and rash guard are included.

Group lessons here are small. Most schools cap it at two or three students per instructor, so a “group” lesson in Santa Teresa is closer to semi-private than the 10-person beach classes you see in other surf towns. For most beginners, that makes the group lesson the best value.

Multi-day packages bring the price down. Mauricio’s 5-day package, for example, works out to $57 per lesson for one person, and several schools quietly discount the second and third lesson if you ask.

Booking direct over WhatsApp is usually the cheapest option. Booking through a platform costs a little more, but you get free cancellation and a paper trail, which is worth something if your plans are loose or the swell might be too big on your lesson day. If you want that safety net, you can compare Santa Teresa surf lessons on Viator.

Which Beach Will You Learn On?

Here’s the thing most surf school lists skip: the beach and the tide matter more than the school. Most schools pick the spot on the day, and these are the ones they use.

BeachSchools that use itBeginner-friendly whenWatch out for
Playa CarmenBlue Mystic, The Girl and the Sea, Lalo’s, Costa Rica Surf and SUP, DELMARMid to high tide, small daysShallow reefs, strong currents

Playa HermosaSurf with Andres, Pocket Wave, Rebel, DELMARMid to high tideRocks at low tide, rips
Playa Mar AzulBlue Mystic and others on bigger daysHigh tide onlyReef exposed at low tide
La LoraSanta Teresa Surf School (Carlos)High TideStrong currents, Crowds
Spots and tides based on my own sessions; which school uses which beach comes from the schools themselves.

My rule from the main guide still applies: once it’s around 6 ft or bigger, beginners should stay out of the main beaches. A good school will move you to a sheltered spot like Mar Azul or Cabuya at high tide, or reschedule. If a school puts first-timers into big surf at Playa Santa Teresa, that tells you everything you need to know.

So before you book, ask one question: “Which beach, and at what tide?” If they answer straight away and it matches the forecast, you’re in good hands.

A snapshot from the video analysis I did with Tiqui Surf

Tiqui, 25 m east of Super La Hacienda, is less of a first-lesson school and more of a coaching outfit. They do surf lessons and coaching, photo and video analysis, and surf-skate sessions to fix your technique on land.

Reviewers say it isn’t the cheapest option in town, but that the feedback is detailed enough to justify it. 4.9 from about 60 Google reviews.

This is the one school I can vouch for; I had two amazing video analysis sessions. Not only was it super informative, but I could literally see an improvement even after only two sessions.

Since it was low season, they had a promotion for a two-hour video analysis for a maximum group of four at about $120, which comes out to $30 per person. A great deal if you ask me!

Which Surf School Is Best for You?

  • Total beginners: Blue Mystic or Del Soul. Small groups, lots of experience, and they move you to the right beach on the day.
  • Nervous or not a strong swimmer: Mahalo Surf Club. Confidence and safety come up in review after review.
  • Kids and families: Surf with Andres, or Rebel Surf School for kids under 5. Blue Mystic also has family pricing.
  • Intermediates: Tiqui Surf Academy for video analysis and surf-skate, or DELMAR if you want a point break trip.
  • On a budget: a group lesson at Blue Mystic or Believe ($60), or a private with Mauricio ($80).
  • Women: Costa Rica Surf and SUP (women-owned), or The Girl and the Sea.
  • Photos of your session: Carlos at Santa Teresa Surf School, or Mahalo for drone video.
  • Several days of surfing: The Girl and the Sea’s programs, or a package with Del Soul or Mauricio.
  • Surf plus wellness: Surf School Santa Teresa or Believe Surf & Yoga.
  • Everything in one place: Santa Teresa Extreme Center for lessons, rentals and ATVs.
  • Surf plus Spanish: Perfect Sunset, or Pura Vida Surfers if you want lessons and a room in one place.

Group, Semi-Private or Private?

Because groups in Santa Teresa are capped at two or three, a group lesson is the best value for most beginners. You still get plenty of attention, and watching the others wipe out takes the pressure off.

A semi-private lesson (two people, one instructor) is perfect for couples or friends at the same level. Go private if you’re nervous, have specific goals, or if you’re an intermediate who needs feedback on your own surfing rather than general tips.

Should You Book a Surf Camp Instead?

If you’re coming for a week or more and want to surf every day, a surf camp can work out cheaper and easier than booking lessons one by one. Accommodation, daily lessons and usually some yoga or video analysis come as one package. I cover a couple of options in the surf camp section of my main guide, or you can browse all surf camps in Santa Teresa and compare them side by side.

Conclusion & Tips Before Your First Surf Lesson

  • Book a day ahead. Most schools schedule around the tide and fill the good slots early.
  • Ask which beach and what tide. It’s the best quality check you have.
  • Be honest about your swimming. Your instructor will pick a different spot if you need one.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water. The sun here is no joke, even when it’s cloudy.
  • Rent a soft-top afterwards. Practising the same day makes a huge difference. Stay on small days and near other surfers.
  • Read up beforehand. My surfing tips for beginners and surf safety guide will make your first lesson go a lot smoother.

Bottom Line, there are plenty of good surf schools in Santa Teresa. Choose based on your own level, proximity to the school, and overall vibe check.

This guide is meant to give you a head start when researching for the best surf school in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. But it doesn’t replace doing your own research and verifying that the school matches your requirements and standards.

Hope this helps, HAPPY SURFING!
