Here’s the thing: before I set off backpacking through Central America, I kind of knew something like this could happen.

But the way it actually went down? Not at all what I expected.

Here’s my story, how scammers work, and how you can avoid my mistake.

Arriving in Bocas Del Toro

It all started when catching the boat to the main Island. Unless you catch a flight, you have to get a boat trip from this place to Isla Colon, the main island in Bocas.

It was early morning, and apart from this English guy and me (let’s call him Harry), there wasn’t a single other tourist on board.

One of the locals—let’s call him Juan, because I honestly forgot his real name—was super friendly with both of us. We were cracking jokes, chatting about life in Bocas, and even talking about some adventures. Juan said he knew all the best spots around the islands.

When we finally got to the island, everything was closed except for one coffee shop. I was hanging around, waiting for a taxi to my hostel, when I spotted Harry and Juan again.

They were talking about going fishing together and maybe doing a boat tour around the islands. I wasn’t really part of the plan, so I just said I’d think about it and went off to catch my taxi.

A few days later, I ran into Juan. He was at a bar near my hostel. So I went and said Hi.

We sat down, had a beer or two, and started talking about the island and things to do here. He was hyping me about fishing, a boat tour to see dolphins, and other remote spots that no one can reach without a boat.

I was intrigued and very much interested. He continued by mentioning Harry and that he is also on board with this plan. At this time, I didn’t know Harry’s number, so I assumed he was really on plan and had my trust with Juan.

After 10-15 minutes, I was all excited and ready to do this amazing fishing and boating tour with Harry and Juan. This is when Juan asked me for $20 to “Pay for the boat”. I was a bit skeptical but also fooled by his social abilities.

So I did. I gave him the money. Agreeing to meet at my hostel the next day and head off early in the morning.  

The Next Day…

The next day comes, I’m all ready for the boat tour, so I wait for Juan and Harry at my hostel.

As you can imagine, I waited about two hours before I finally gave up. All the attempts to call Juan were hopeless, and as for Harry, I didn’t even have his number.

Finally, I took my surfboard, angry and confused, and went for a surfing session in Bocas’ most famous break.

A couple of days later, I finally ran into Harry again. He looked frustrated, and that’s when he told me he’d been scammed too. Turns out, Juan had taken about $100 from him with the same story. Both of us felt foolish, but at least we now knew what really happened.

Not long after, I spotted Juan in town.

This time, I confronted him directly. He didn’t give my money back, just shrugged and tried to laugh it off. I told him, point-blank, that if he didn’t return the money, I’d spread his picture everywhere (even though I didn’t have one) and warn every traveler I met not to trust him.

Maybe I didn’t get my cash back, but I made sure he knew he wouldn’t be scamming anyone else so easily.

Conclusion and Valuable Travel Lesson

Looking back, it wasn’t really about the $20.

It was about how easy it is to trust someone when you’re in a new place, feeling open, excited, and a little bit naive. Juan didn’t scam me with force. He did it with charm, stories, and social proof. With just enough familiarity to lower my guard.

That’s the real lesson.

Scams like this don’t usually feel like scams in the moment. They feel like an opportunity. Adventure. “You don’t want to miss out on this.” And when you’re traveling, especially solo, you’re more likely to say yes because you want connection and experience.

Here’s what I learned:

• Never pay upfront for anything informal without clear details.
• If someone mentions that another traveler is involved, verify it directly.
• Excitement is not a replacement for common sense.

Traveling opens you up in beautiful ways. But being open doesn’t mean being careless. You can trust people and still protect yourself.

I lost $20, but I gained awareness, and that’s worth far more.

If you time it right, April in Bali is pure quality without peak-season chaos.

Maldives

The Maldives is one of those surf spots in April that seem nearly unfair.

April is a transitional month here. The tail end of lighter winds meets the beginning of southwest swells, creating cleaner conditions across the reef breaks. It’s early swell season, so you’ll often score waves and fewer crowds before the busiest months kick in.

This isn’t the place for beginners. Most of the breaks are over sharp reef, so it’s better for intermediate or advanced surfers chasing those long, perfect right handers.

You’ll find surf resorts, beachfront villas, and boat trips between atolls. It’s not cheap, but you get the best of both worlds: tropical luxury and perfect, mechanical waves.

Mexico

Mexico is one of the most reliable destinations to surf in April if you want variety.

Up north, Peniche offers consistent beach breaks for all skill levels. Down south along the Vicentina coast near Sagres and Arrifana, you’ll find spectacular cliffs, clean offshore mornings, and fun point-style setups.

Cooler water. Fewer crowds. Proper spring power.

Costa Rica

It’s the tail end of dry season on the Pacific side, so you still get clean offshore mornings before the heavier rains roll in. Southwest swells begin showing more consistently, especially toward the end of the month.

Santa Teresa delivers fun beach breaks and a proper surf town vibe. Nosara is great for beginner surfers chasing mellow, playful waves. Tamarindo gives you that laid-back, year-round accessibility.

Warm water. Beachfront villas and hostels. Easy logistics.

April here is a smooth surf vacation before the busiest season hits.

A full disclaimer, they make it look so much easier. I had a tough time getting into barrels like that when I was surfing in Nicaragua. 

But it’s a great practice.

3. Now Now Media- Changing Tempo

Starring Mikey February, this video has style written all over it. 

Just watching him ride these waves effortlessly makes you want to jump out of your seat and paddle out on a twenny. But then you realize you’re not Mikey.

4. Needessentials- Torren Martyn, ‘Calypte

This is a video that takes you on a voyage on ‘Calypte, the sailboat Torren sails around Singapore, Malaysia, and eventually Indonesia.

It’s the kind of video that makes you rethink your board choice and your approach to surfing.

Less aggression. More flow.

5. Patagonia– The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez

This one’s different. The incredible story of one of the greatest in the history of the surfing world.

It takes you through

• How Garry became an icon
• The discovery of one of the greatest waves on earth
• Spirituality in surfing & life

It’s a real mind-opening video, and at one point makes you go, “Ha, I want to do that!”

6. Surfline- Maps To Nowhere

Maps to Nowhere is a series in which some of the world’s greatest surfers are taken to a random place on the planet. 

You can expect:

• Surf trips with no background story of the place
• Epic barrels
• Real travel exploration

This is honestly my dream job scenario in a video. All a surfer want is some high quality waves with no one around. 

And this is what this series is all about. 

What makes these the best surfing videos on YouTube?

It’s not just wave quality.

The best surfing videos usually have one of these:

• A strong sense of place
• Personality
• Storytelling
• Or a progression you can relate to

Big waves are impressive.
But emotion is what makes you replay a video.

Conclusion

The best surfing videos on YouTube aren’t always the most viewed ones.

They’re the ones that make you eager to go on a surf trip, change the way you look at surfing, or remind you why surfing is more than just a sport.

Truth is, there are many more videos to add to this list. And I will be adding to it as I watch more epic videos.

On one of those flat-day runs, I hiked to the famous Red Frog Beach on Bastimentos Island, a roughly 5-8 min boat ride from the main island. If you’re worried about doing this hike on your own, make sure to book a guided hike. 

Back then, I met a group of people in my hostel, and we all planned to hike together, even though no one really knew the exact path, and it wasn’t well marked. 

We were seven, a mix of boys and girls, and one particular girl I was kind of falling in love with. We started the hike where the boat dropped us off. Everything went well, the weather was perfect, the path was clear, and everyone was vibing. 

Until we reached a fork in the path. Going right was probably the safe bet and the original path, so that’s where everyone went. But something called me to take a left. I let the girl know I’m going alone, so at least someone knows where I am if something happens. 

I started walking and immediately realised this is not a path. I had to climb a rock that was essentially above the sea; the waves were crashing, and I had to time it just right so I wouldn’t get smashed and fall. The path continued through a thick bed of dead plants; walking on it was sketchy, and I couldn’t help but think of all the potential snakes under those plants. 

After a good 10 min, a clearance in the forest, finally, I thought. But suddenly I see a family of monkeys playing around, and weirdly enough, a parrot standing on the ground, yes, it’s not a typo, on the ground in front of the monkeys (see pic above).

I wasn’t sure what was happening, but something felt weird; the energy in that place was off. Almost like the monkey and the parrot were fighting. 

I walked slowly to not alert the monkeys, but then I found the most beautiful feather. It had yellow, green, and red on it, so I had to grab it. I will give it to the girl, I thought to myself! 

In the last couple of steps, I hear someone shouting my name. It’s the group they were worried about, I shout back, “I’m coming!” But then I saw it, the famous Red Frog that the islands are famous for.

It was so tiny I almost stepped on it. I bent down, took a closer look, took a picture, and thanked the frog and that path for teaching me something. 

Conclusion

Don’t be tempted to follow others; if you truly believe in your path, method, or whatever you think of, stick with it. That day, I promised myself never to follow others blindly, because you’ll never know what you might be missing. 

Oh, and BTW, I ended up giving the feather to that girl so she can remember me. Two weeks later, we traveled all of Central America together and had a two-and-a-half-year relationship.

How To Get To Bocas Del Toro

If you don’t know yet, Bocas del Toro is an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea off Panama’s coast. It’s about a 1-2-hour flight from Panama City or a 10-hour bus ride. 

If you’re short on time, book a flight and save yourself some headache. A short flight from Panama City to Bocas Del Toro Airport and you’re in surf paradise.  Please note that an additional surfboard fee applies; check with your airline.

The other option is to take the bus. To do that, you have to take a first bus or taxi from Panama City Airport to Albrook Bus Terminal. You need to buy the ticket on the spot. 

As far as I remeber you can’t book online. 

It’s an overnight bus ($35). You’ll arrive in Almirante, take a taxi ($1) to the docks, then take a boat ride ($6) to Isla Colon. All in all, it should cost ~$41 and take ~12 hours. 

If you continue your travel to Costa Rica, there are plenty of shuttle services from Bocas to San Jose.

When to Surf in Bocas del Toro?

The best time for surfing in Bocas del Toro is typically between December and March, when north swells light up the Caribbean side of Panama. This is when reef breaks start working consistently, and you’ll get your highest chance of scoring clean, punchy waves.

This is the most important thing you need to know about surfing in Bocas. 

The Caribbean Sea is a fickle place. It’s inconsistent: flat days are common, and the weather changes quickly.  

Outside of that window, conditions can still surprise you, but you’re gambling more with flat spells and unpredictable weather. 

Best Surf Spots In Bocas Del Toro

Now that you know when to go, let’s talk about where to go and, perhaps more importantly, where not to go based on your current skill level. 

Isla Colón

First off, let’s talk about the main island.

This is the biggest island in the archipelago and is home to the most consistent breaks. It’s also the most exposed one, so even when there’s very little swell, you can find something here.

The two main breaks are- 

1. Playa Paunch

Located about 10 min taxi ride from the town center, this is the “main break” of the island so to speak. It’s always working, even on smaller days, and it’s always crowded. It’s a reef break with a predominant left, but the right is also fun. 

When the swell is bigger, you’ll understand why it’s called Paunch. It will literally punch you on the reef if you miss the take-off. It becomes hollow, heavy, and fast. In these conditions, it’s best saved for more advanced surfers. 

But on any given day, it’s a manageable intermediate+ wave. Definitely one of the best surf breaks on the island. 

2. Playa Bluff

Playa Bluff is farther from the town center (approx a 20-minute taxi ride). It’s a slabby beach break that works only when the elements align.

You need light offshore winds, medium swell, and the right sandbar for it to be perfect. But even then, it’s shifty, very technical, and fast wave. Plus, it’s known as the surfbaord grave yard. There’s literallt hundreds of broken boards used to decorate the beach. 

If you go there, be mentally prepared that it might happen to you. But just know, if you catch a wave there, it will all be worth it! 

There are additional breaks on the main island, but I won’t list them here. I will say that locals are very protective of their “secret” spots and some have broken glass on the beach to deter tourists, so keep your eyes open. 

Isla Carenero

Isla Carenero is about a 30-second boat ride from the main island; you can literally swim to it. But please don’t; a taxi costs $1, so it’s not worth it. 

Because of the island’s angle, most of the swell hits only the northern part of the island.

1. Carenero Point

Carenero island is a taxi boat hop from the main island. In fact, the water taxi will drop you off at the surf point, and you can arrange for it to pick you up after a couple of hours or so. 

The wave is a long peeling left-hander that can get hollow in some sections on the right day. It can get crowded when the waves are good, but generally it’s manageable, as there are a couple of take-off points along the wave, and sometimes they don’t connect.  

2. Old Man’s

Further down, the main point is a reef break that is perfect for beginners. When the swell wraps around the main point and hits the reef, it crumbles and breaks gently, making it a perfect spot for longboarders or beginners. 

As I said, this won’t be another ultimate surf guide, so I will stop here with the surf spots in Bocas.

The Part Of Surfing Bocas Del Toro No One Tells You About

Here’s the thing most blogs/videos miss. 

You’re often dependent on boats or taxis to reach surf spots. 

So this means: 

• Paying for transport. And if you’re there for a long period, it adds up!
• Relying on others and coordinating transport. 
• Dealing with schedules that don’t always match the swell. 

Unless you’re staying in one of the more expensive places near Playa Paunch, you most likely need a taxi to get to any surf spot on the Island. But even then, you can walk to the surf spot, but you need a taxi to go to town, so it’s a trade-off. 

For the first two weeks, I stayed at Skyull’s House. A really cool surf hostel just 5 min walk from Playa Paunch. It was great that I didn’t have to take a taxi every time I surfed there, but eventually I had to move, as it was a bit too crowded for the price you pay per room. 

And on that note, this reminds me of that time I got scammed in Bocas Del Toro. Not by the hostel, of course.

Which brings me to the next section of this blog. 

Where To Stay In Bocas Del Toro For The Best Surf

Here’s the hard truth. There is no perfect location if you want a bit of everything. 

Most people stay in the main town; there are many hostels and private accommodation options to choose from, and the nightlife is just a short walk away. Which can be a problem if you’re a light sleeper (not me, though). 

For quieter nights, you’ll need to get closer to Playa Paunch or Playa Bluff. There are many accommodation options tucked away in the jungle, yet a minute’s walk from the beach. Those tend to be more expensive but can be worth it if you want proximity to the waves and a chill vibe. For budget friendly option, check out Skully’s House.

Another option is to stay on the other islands. They offer a more laid-back vibe, but that also means there are fewer things to do at night. 

A Quick Reality Check for Surf Travelers

If your entire trip depends on surfing every day, Bocas can disappoint you.

If you’re flexible and enjoy:

• Exploring islands
• Slowing down
• Mixing surf with travel experiences

Then Bocas makes a lot more sense. Just keep that in mind.

 What To Do In Bocas Del Toro When It Gets Flat

Even if there are waves, at one point or another, you’ll need to rest. Let your body recover from the endless paddle and wipeouts you’ve stacked on it. 

Bocas has a lot to offer. From diving, hiking, or just chillin under a coconut tree in one of the many sand beaches it has to offer. 

Hike To Red Frog Beach

Red Frog is located on Bastimentos Island. To get there, you’ll need a water taxi.

Once you’re there, you can follow the track that leads to Wizard Beach, and from there walk to the end of the bay and follow the track until you reach Red Frog Beach. Back then, there was no clear track so we had to figure out the way.

Alternatively, you can take a water taxi to Magic Bay and walk a short hike to Red Frog Beach.

If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see the famous red frog, a tiny poisonous frog the island is famous for, and you can also see monkeys and beautiful birds. And if things really align, it can inspire you to get your first tattoo, like I did. 

Go Island Hopping and Watch Dolphins

Now, to be honest, I didn’t do this activity. I tend to avoid crowded places with marine animals; it doesn’t feel natural. But, the dolphins are free and wild so if you never seen any, it’s a great chance to see wild dolphins. Also, if you’re on a tight schedule, it’s a great tour to do.

You can also snorkel and visit some of the remote islands of the archipelago. Think empty white sand beaches, perfect for your Instagram feed. 

Hit The Boat Party! 

Yes, boat party!!! 

Honestly, it’s pretty insane. It starts in the afternoon and goes all the way into the sunset. Nothing much to write here, if you’ve ever been to a tropical party, you know the feeling. 

If you haven’t, then you must go to this one. 

Conclusion

Surfing in Bocas Del Toro is a must-have on the bucket list. Not because of the epic waves, which often are very epic. But for the combination of warm weather, a paradise-like atmosphere, and a mix of waves on tap. 

Plan for at least 10-14 days to increase your chances of scoring good waves. Anything under 10 days is somewhat risky. Your best bit on any given day is Playa Paunch, but if you’re after some barrels, check out Playa Bluff.

If surfing ever feels too serious, Ben Gravy is the reminder you need. Honestly, sometimes I’ll hit the beach, find crappy conditions, and think what will Ben Gravy do in this situation. The answer: paddle out and have fund 100% of the time.

3. Kale Brock

If you actually want to get better at surfing, this channel is gold.

True story: Kale’s channel was one of the most important channels in my beginner surfing phase. I watched and implemented every single video on his channel. Fast forward 8 years later, I saw Kale in Australia while checking a surf spot. 

I shook his hand, told him how much his help meant to me, and thanked him. He smiled back and said, “That’s why my videos are out there”. Such a great guy and a wonderful teacher. 

4. Surf Simply 

Surf Simply is basically a surf school on YouTube, but done right.

You’ll find:

If you didn’t know, Central America is made up of the following countries, from south to north: Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico. 

There are many things to do here, whether you like scuba diving, surfing, or exploring the Mayan ruins; it’s a place with no shortage of adventures and attractions. 

If you’re like me and looking to surf along the Central American Coastline, well, you’re in for a treat. With affordable hostels, cheap food, and warm weather, this is a backpackers’ paradise. 

While this won’t be an itinerary-style blog post, I will share the path I took to follow the waves and best weather windows across Central America. Oh, if you’re wondering how I ended up on this trip, just check out my about page.

So if you’re looking to see how a backpacking trip across Central America really is, keep reading! 

But first, let me get this out if the way… 

Is Central America Safe For Backpackers? 

Short answer, YES! 

Longer versions, if you’re looking for trouble, you’ll easily find them.

So, here’s the thing. Central America has the reputation of being very dangerous. A place where people rob you for a watch or harm you because you walked in front of their house. 

I spent six months traveling with locals, hitchhiking across Nicaragua, and having one too many beers in Costa Rica. Not once I ever felt unsafe in any of the countries I visited. 

That being said, you should ALWAYS be cautious and practice good common sense. 

People with bad intentions can be found anywhere, regardless of the geographical location. 

Don’t flash your valuables, always walk with a friend at night (or avoid walking at night altogether), and take extra caution in big cities and crowded areas.

Don’t be discouraged by the media and false stories. Central America is safe as long as you’re not doing anything stupid.

When Is The Best Time To Go Backpacking In Central America?

The best time to go backpacking in Central America is during the dry season approx between December and April. This is when it’s more likely to have sunny days, warm weather, and more attractions.  

The downside, though, is that it’s more expensive during this time, as it’s the peak tourist season. So if you’re on a budget travel trip, consider avoiding these times. 

The wet season, which roughly runs from May to late November, is more affordable but can be unpredictable. With serious weather hazards like hurricanes and severe storms, hitting unexpectedly in certain places. 

When Is The Best Time To Surf In Central America?

The best time to surf in Central America is during the rainy season, roughly from May to October. That’s when consistent south and southwest swells light up the Pacific coast, bringing longer-period waves and more reliable surf day after day.

The Caribbean side offers waves from November to March. 

What Is The Best Route to Backpacking in Central America? 

The best route will depend on your preferences and, most importantly, how long you plan to stay there. 

Here’s how I did it. 

Backpacking Panama in January-February

Since I was chasing waves, and it was January, it only made sense to start in Bocas Del Torro, Panama. A beautiful chain of islands along the Caribbean coast of Panama. 

I spent a month and a half there just surfing, partying, and chillin when there was no surf.

Absolutely amazing. 

If you ever find yourself wondering what to do on a flat day, make sure you check out the beautiful Starfish Beach, go Island hopping, or take a kayak tour.

Surfing in Bocas del Toro offers a variety of waves that suit all levels. Beginners can find a great spot on Isla Carenero, a $1 (at the time) taxi boat ride from the main island. While more advanced surfers can find heavier waves on the main island, Isla Colón. Spots like Playa Paunch and Playa Bluff are the most popular, but there are more to discover. 

Since the surf season starts in May approx, I had to wait a bit before I chase more waves. And I needed to rest a bit, since I had been surfing twice a day for more than a month. 

It was a great time to chill in Boqute. Usually, people go there to hike the famous Volcán Barú. I ended up skipping this activity due to the weather (and a bit of laziness, tbh). 

But the town has a great vibe and plenty of small local shops that offer everything from food to classic souvenirs you can take home as a memory or a gift. 

Backpacking Costa Rica In Feb-March

Crossing the border from Panama to Costa Rica is pretty straightforward. You can do it with a company that offers these services; I’ll try to link to one. 

Or, for the real backpackers out there, you can DIY it. 

Which is what I did. 

Basically, you catch a bus to Paso Canoas, hop off, and ignore all the people that are trying to “help” you cross the border. 

Then you head to the immigration office, have your passport stamped, and continue to Costa Rica, where you need to have it stamped again to enter a new country. 

From Paso Canoas, we took a bus to Domonical, a small beach town centered on surfing. There was not much to do in town besides surfing, eating in different restaurants, and drinking good coffee. 

However, once you go out of town (take the bus or a guided tour), there are plenty of things to explore in the area. 

For example, Manual Antonio National Park, Nauyaca Waterfall Nature Park, and Parque Nacional Marino Ballena, better known as Punta Uvita. 

Backpacking Nicaragua In April

After a month of discovering Costa Rica, it was time to move on to the next country. 

Nicaragua is known for many active volcanoes, chill vibes, and, in the surfing world, 300 days of offshore winds. Courtesy of Lake Nicaragua. 

The border crossing is similar to the one between Panama and Costa Rica. Just make sure you stamp your passport when entering and leaving. Trust me, they won’t look for you to do it! 

For my first stop, I headed to Playa El Gigante. A chicken bus ride from the closest town, Rivas. 

A quiet fishing village about an hour away from Rivas. Or 2-3h from the bigger city, San Juan Del Sur. 

The main reason to go there is to surf the famous Playa Colorado, located north of Playa Gigante, and it’s the closest place to stay on a budget. It’s about a 30 min walk, but it’s so worth it!  

Beginners can enjoy the waves of Playa Gigante, and there’s a beach that stays flat most of the time, which is perfect for swimming. 

Some of the other places I’ve been include Ometepe Island, Poppoyo, and the city of Granada.

Nicaragua is huge, and there are many things to do there beyond surfing. 

Hiking an active volcano, dune surfing a dormant volcano, and sleeping in a treehouse are just some of those things. Check out my full Nicaragua itinerary. 

Backpacking El Salvador In May 

May is officially the start of the surf season in Central America. Luckily for me, it’s my birthday month. Being a paradise for right-hand point breaks, I knew this would be the best birthday of my life, and I had to gift myself a stay in El Salvador during peak season. 

Getting there wasn’t easy though. 

The budget-friendly option was to take a bus from Mangua, Nicaragua, to San Salvador. A 12-hour journey that would cross Honduras and take us to El Salvador. 

The problem? We couldn’t book the ticket online. 

After going there in person, they told us to wait for the next bus, which was at 1 AM (about 6-8 hours later), and hope there was an empty spot. We took a taxi back to our Airbnb, explained the whole situation, and she let us stay there until the night passed. 

It’s amazing how many people are willing to help you when you’re travelling. 

At the end, we took a taxi to the bus station, and there were 2 seats left, so we hopped on with a smile and a big sigh of relief. Now, I can’t remember exactly why we couldn’t book the bus, as I’m writing this blog 4 years later (talk about procrastination), but if you do end up taking the bus from Nicaragua to El Salvador, make sure to check with the company before. 

Getting to San Salvador

Once we arrived to San Salvador, we had to try the famous poposas. Then we took an Uber to Playa El Tunco. 

A famous beach town known for the point break El Sunzal and pebble beach break La Bocana. Surfing-wise, this is paradise! 

When the waves are not too big, El Sunzal is great for beginners and intermediates, offering a mellow, long ride. While La Bocana stays punchy and fast, even if it’s smallish. 

Now, when you get bigger swells, El Sunzal is a great playground for advanced surfers! It basically works on all tides but is best in mid-tide. Note that on higher tides and bigger swells, the seawall generates a dangerous backwash that makes it difficult to come in. 

I remember one time after a heavy rainfall and a big swell, the river opened up so you had to cross it first to get to the other side and walk to the point. But the tide and waves were so big that you had to time it and make a run for it, otherwise you’ll be swept back to the ocean. Not a good feeling. 

There are many other surf spots in El Salvador to explore, and plenty of activities to do. Some of which include the Santa Ana Volcano hike and the Tamanique Waterfalls. But I’ll leave it for a different blog post. 

Backpacking in Guatemala in June

After almost 4-5 months of pure surfing and wave chasing, it was time to go inland, away from the ocean. My ex at the time wasn’t a surfer, and we had to balance things out. 

We took a bus again from Santa Ana after spending a couple of days in Guatemala City, and then to Antigua. A beautiful Spanish colonial city in the heart of Guatemala. 

The goal? To hike a dormant volcano to watch an active one in front of it. Sounds weird right? Well, you HAVE to go there. 

IF YOU TAKE ANYTHING FROM THIS BLOG POST, LET IT BE THIS– DO THE ACATENANGO VOLCANO HIKE. 

Hopefully, I made my point.

Anyway, the hike itself is very challenging. It’s a 4-hour hike on a steep mountain with few flat spots. You could have a horse take you up (yeah im serious) but i have no idea how much it will cost. 

We paid about 40-50$ for the whole experience. It includes the bus ride to and from your accommodation, meals covered, warm clothing, and, obviously, the tent and other gear once you arrive at base camp. Plus, you have guides with years of experince on these mountains. 

You can hike up the mountain on your own and just rent a tent from one of the many base camps, but honestly, I’d definitely recommend supporting the locals and booking a guided tour. This is coming from someone who never does guided tours. But here it felt different, it was like we were with a friend who happened to be from there and knew a spot. 

From Antigua, there are many spots to visit or even head to next. Lake Atitlan makes a good day trip. 

But I was more interested in Mayan culture, so we headed to Tikal, the heart of ancient Mayan civilization. It really felt like an Indiana Jones movie for me. The ruins, pyramids and how the forest has taken over all the structures all made it feel like a movie. But this was real, and honestly, one of the best experiences I had in Central America.

If you’re considering visiting Tikal, stop thinking about it and go!

Backpacking Mexico in July 

From Tikal, you can go to Mexico or Belize if you want to continue travelling. I had to choose Mexico over Belize as my budget wouldn’t allow me to travel both. But Belize is a beautiful country that I wish to visit one day. 

Getting to Mexico from Tikal was fairly easy as I took a flight to Cancun. You could go the budget-friendly way and take a bus to the closest border, then another to your desired destination. And that was an option for me. 

But given the fact it was my last destination on my backpacking trip in Central America, I figured I’ll take a plane to save me some time on the road. Just know that distances are vast, and any bus you’ll take will be a long journey. 

Cancun felt a little bit too Americanized (if that’s a word). You know what I mean, big food chains, nightclubs, and flashing lights everywhere. Oh, and did I mention the buses of college students? Yup, it definitely felt like a version of Vegas. 

After a couple of days, I took the bus to Playa Del Carmen. A smaller town, still a bit touristy, but it has the Mexican soul in it. The beaches are picture-perfect, and don’t forget to visit a cenote. It’s basically a freshwater pool, usually underground, though some are above ground. 

And if you’re really feeling adventurous, you can dive into one or more of those. I had a great time diving into a 30m-deep cenote; it felt like entering a black hole. Scary and exciting at the same time. Some people even said they saw a crocodile while diving in one of the cenotes, how crazy is that? 

While you’re there, visit Tulum. A much quieter town tailored to couples and romantic getaways. It has some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll see, probably anywhere in the world. 

However, keep in mind that during these months (Jul-August), seaweed is commonly found all over the beaches as it gets detached from the ocean floor, surfaces and the wind carries it to the beach. It’s a natural phenomenon crucial to the marine environment. 

Conclusion Of My Central America Backpacking Trip

Backpacking in Central America changed my life forever. For me, this was more than a backpacking trip: I surfed my soul out, hiked active volcanoes, dived into an underground pool, and traveled with a soulmate I met on the road.

This trip taught me that life isn’t about what you have or how much money you make; it’s about who you’re with and what makes you smile every day. 

I saw people living in a mud house with more livelihood than I and many others I know, even though we had “more” in life. This alone was worth every single minute and dollar spent on this trip. 

Now, I wish I could break down the exact costs, but unfortunately, it was a long time ago (4 years), and I can’t remember the exact prices of everything. That being said, it’s probably slightly more expensive now, given the current state of the economy and the rising popularity of many places in Central America.

Best Places to Surf in March for Beginners

Honestly, as a beginner, you are lucky enough to be able to surf practically anywhere there’s white water. 

That is if you can do it safely. Don’t be a hero! 

But of course, some places are perfect for learning while others are just OK. 

Bali, Indonesia

Bali is known as one of the best surf destinations in the world. 

Unfortunately, I’ve never been (long story), but I know from good friends and Uncle YouTube that it’s well worth the hype. 

So, March is shoulder season in Indo, meaning waist to shoulder high waves (sometimes smaller) are common. This is great for beginners, as it’s easier to learn and improve when the waves aren’t trying to k*ll you. 

Spots around Canggu and the main surf beaches near Kuta offer soft, peaky waves over sand. Easy paddles. Forgiving takeoffs. Perfect for learning to surf or just getting comfortable in the lineup.

Lombok (Indonesia)

If you’re looking for a more laid-back scene, definitely check out Lombok.

Areas like Kuta Lombok have sandy beach breaks and mellow reef setups that work well for beginners and longboarders. The waves are playful, the crowds are lighter, and the vibe is relaxed. 

Great place to get started and improve your surfing. 

Sri Lanka (South Coast)

The South Coast in Sri Lanka is on FIRE in March. 

If you’re looking to get your very first surf lesson, Weligama is your go-to. You’ll find plenty of surf schools along the beach that offer both surf lessons and board rentals. 

Add a tropical climate to that, and you’ve got the best combo for any beginner surfer.

Perfect for backpackers and surfers looking for easy progression.

Best Places to Surf in March for Intermediates

If you feel more comfortable with your surfing and want to improve, you’ll want to go to a place that slightly challenges you. 

Luckily, during this time of the year, you can still score some pretty good swells. 

Taghazout, Morocco

March is still a strong month across Morocco, especially in places like Taghacout and Agadir. 

The big winter swells are fading, but spots like Anchor Point still deliver long right-hand waves. Fewer crowds. More rhythm. Plenty of room to work on turns.

Legendary surf without peak-season madness.

Ericeira, Portugal

Ericeira is the 2nd Surfing Reserve after Malibu Surfrider Beach. And btw, it was my first solo surfing trip. 

It’s a quiet fishing village that hosts plenty of wave breaks for all levels. 

March brings consistent north Atlantic energy, with options for every level. Reefs like Ribeira d’Ilhas offer long rides, while nearby beach breaks keep things fun.

Cold water, but some of the best conditions of the year.

Costa Rica (Pacific Coast)

March is an excellent month for Intermediates to be in Costa Rica. While the main surfing season runs from May to November, the rest of the year is still consistent with shoulder-high waves or less. 

Meaning you’ll have fewer surfers and more time to practice the craft. 

Places like Santa Teresa offer offshore mornings, peaky waves, and consistent swell. Plenty of lefts and rights. 

Great for intermediates looking to push their surfing.

Best Places to Surf in March for Advanced Surfers

For all the real adrenaline chasers out there, March is still a solid month to be looking for barrels.

Peinche, Portugal

If you’re after fast, barrelling waves, then Supertubes is the place to be. 

It’s a peaky beach break that breaks on a very shallow sandbar, then creates what many have called the Pipeline of Europe. 

March is less chaotic than mid-winter, but you can still score the wave of your life when the conditions align. 

Pipeline, Hawaii

Pipeline is not for the faint-hearted, and you definitely should NOT paddle out if you’re not ready for it. 

For me, I’d rather watch it from with sandy feet, thank you very much. 

But if you know you’re ready, then March is a great time to be there. As it’s the tail end of winter, there’s plenty of energy still in the ocean and usually fewer crowds by this time of the year. 

Siragao, Philippines

Staying in the theme of fast, hollow, and challenging waves, Siragao is Asia’s answer to Pipeline. 

Cloud 9 isn’t at full power yet, but you can still score clean sessions with fewer crowds. Warm water. Reef breaks. Real surf vibes.

Keep in mind the monsoon season is at its tail end, so it’s best to keep an eye on the forecast. 

Budget-Friendly Surf Trips in March

Any destination that’s considered budget-friendly will usually be more expensive during its high season.

Sri Lanka

Where Are The Best Surf Spots in January?

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of those surf destinations that just works in January.

The Pacific Coast hits its dry season, meaning sunshine, offshore winds, and warm water that feels like a hug every time you paddle out.

Costa Rica offers many great surf spots like Tamarindo, Nosara, and Santa Teresa, which offer mellow beach breaks perfect for beginners. At the same time, Hermosa and Pavones challenge more advanced surfers with punchier waves.

You’ll find plenty of surf camps, great accommodation options, and a super chill vibe that makes it easy to stay longer than planned. 

But be aware, you will get addicted to the “Pura Vida” vibe.  

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka in January is a dream for anyone looking for warm water, smooth lines, and a laid-back island vibe.

The south coast lights up during this time of year, especially around Weligama and Midigama, with a mix of sandy bays and mellow reefs that are perfect for intermediate surfers.

Panama (Caribbean Coast)

The Caribbean side of Panama is one of the most underrated surf spots in January.

Bocas Del Toro was my first tropical surf destination, and I absolutely loved it! 

Here you can find a hollow sand bottom break (Bluff Beach) and a left-hand reef break that gets heavy when the right swell hits. If you’re looking for something more forgiving, you can take a taxi boat to the nearby Island. 

But this is not your typical surf destination, swells in the Caribbean can be unpredictable, and flat days are not uncommon. That said, when elements align, it’s like surfing in paradise. 

The town has a healthy party vibe, accommodation is somehow affordable, and the warm water means you’ll never need a wetsuit. 

Also, there are plenty of other things to do when there are no waves. Visiting Star Beach, going on a boat party, and renting an ATV to explore the island are a few ideas. 

Southern California

Southern California hits its stride in January thanks to powerful north Pacific storms sending consistent winter surf down the coastline.

The mornings are crisp, the winds are usually offshore, and spots like Malibu, Huntington, and the San Diego beaches come alive.

You’ll need a proper wetsuit, but the waves make it worth it.

This time of year brings a mix of hollow beach breaks and long points depending on the swell direction, giving all levels something to ride. It’s also a great place to watch or learn from skilled locals.

Nicaragua is also starting to show signs of its famous offshore winds. Around Playa El Gigante, you’ll find different surf spots that suit surfers of all levels. Surfing in Nicaragua is often considered a year-round activity, but some months are better than others. 

California is at it’s peak winter season. Spots are firing up from the wild coastlines of Northern California to the urban beaches in Southern California.

March is when global surf starts shifting. You’ll still catch season swells in Morocco, but Bali and Portugal begin waking up with fresh energy. This is one of the best months as peak season draws to a close. 

Bali is entering the early stages of its dry season. You’ll find warm water, long walls, and classic Bali surf setups that work for both beginner surfers and more confident riders. 

South Portugal is another gem during March. It’s still quiet and affordable, but the first Atlantic pulses start rolling in. It’s great for beginners because the surf is not at its heaviest yet, but still offers punchy waves to level up your skills.

Morocco keeps delivering long rights and stable winds, making it a perfect destination if you want more consistent point breaks.

Where To Surf In April – Bali, Maldives, Mexico

April kicks off peak surf season in the Maldives and ramps things up across Bali. This is one of the top surf months for clean, playful waves and warm water. If you’re planning your surf trip early in the year, April gives you a sweet spot between small summer crowds and shoulder-season discounts.

Bali continues improving, offering surf across both beaches and reefs. Beginners will find easy takeoffs at Batu Bolong, while intermediate surfers can score glassy rights and lefts around Bukit.

I’ve personally flown across oceans with my board for less than the cost of a new wetsuit, and I’m here to show you how you can do the same. Expect epic waves, vibrant surf scenes, and top-rated surf schools in every one of these must-visit surf towns.

Whether you’re based in the U.S., Europe, or Australia, these popular surf spots are accessible with flights under $500.

Let’s dive in, because the waves and deals won’t wait. 

How were these budget-friendly surf deals found? 

First, let me set some expectations. 

I checked all these deals with my favorite flight comparison site, Skyscanner. 

All destinations were searched for on the exact dates (a 12-day round trip), which were picked randomly and about a month in advance. Sorry, last-minute people! 

Most importantly, as always, I searched in INCOGNITO mode and avoided holidays and peak seasons. 

Some say that if you book a flight, it should always be on a Wednesday or something, but I’ve never noticed a difference in terms of a specific day of the week being cheaper than the others. 

My goto flight searching app is Skyscanner, it’s by far the best when it comes to searching for affordable flights. That’s why I included it in the must-have surfing apps blog.

Last thing: I chose big cities as departure destinations because they’re most likely the cheapest.

While there are many more, I’m sure, I’ve listed some of my absolute favorite ones here, and the first one is a dream (it’s where I celebrated my 26th birthday, and I can’t wait to go back!) 

El Sunzal, El Salvador

Flights from Paris to Lisbon start as low as $245, with quick direct flights averaging $390 and taking just 2.5 hours. With reliable airlines like Air France and dozens of departure times daily, it’s easy to plan a trip that fits your schedule.

Top Surf Spots

Ericeira – A designated World Surfing Reserve, this legendary surf town offers reef, point, and beach breaks all within close reach.

Great for all levels, whether you’re here to learn to surf or test yourself at heavier waves like Coxos.

Plenty of surf camps and hostels in town offer surf packages that include gear, lessons, and even food, perfect for a cheap surf trip setup.

Getting There

From Lisbon airport, you can reach Ericeira in about 1.5 hours by car or bus. It’s a scenic ride and makes for an easy jumpstart to your surf adventure. Rentals and public transport are both accessible and budget-friendly.

Ericeira is a buzzing little surf town with something for every traveler. You’ll find many surf camps, affordable hostels, boutique surf villas, and co-living setups.

If you’re short on time, a private taxi or ride-share will get you there in 2.5–3 hours and still be super affordable compared to Western standards.

Midigama is built for surfers. The setup is simple, hostels and homestays literally across the road from the beach, with nothing but a stretch of road dividing you from the waves.

The food is a standout too: grab a plate of rice and curry, the local favorite, for less than $2.

You’ll find a laid-back atmosphere, community vibes, and prices so low you’ll seriously consider extending your stay. With plenty of surf, daily yoga, live music, and a rotating crew of surf travelers, Midigama offers the ultimate budget surf experience without sacrificing quality.

How to Score Flights Under $500 (Anywhere)

Here’s a quick step by step to help you find those affordable flights anywhere in the world. 

• Use flight search tools like Skyscanner, WayAway, and Trip.com
• Use incognito mode
• Be flexible with dates and airports. Avoid holidays.

That’s not to say that you can’t live on a budget in less affordable places, as I did in Australia. 

But as a beginner budget traveler, I’d suggest you take the easy route first.

Central America hotspots

Surfing in Central America is every budget surfer’s dream. With consistent surf year-round, a warm climate, and great food, you don’t need anything else. 

Central America offers unbeatable value, especially in places like Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala, where you can surf world-class breaks, eat for a few bucks, and crash at budget-friendly hostels right by the beach. 

Here’s an example of a cheap flight I found when researching top surfing destinations.

South Asia steals 

You can’t talk about surfing in South Asia without mentioning Indonesia. While Bali is becoming increasingly expensive, you can still find great deals if you know where to look. 

Sri Lanka is great for a budget surf trip, with a low cost of living compared to Western countries. The Indian Ocean sends pretty consistent swell year-round to the island; just make sure you’re on the right side of the island. 

South-West coast season runs from Nov-Apr while the East Coast season runs from May-Oct.

Europe on a dime

Europe can surprise you too—Portugal, Sardinia, and southern Spain offer affordable surf towns and mellow point breaks, especially if you go outside of summer.

What to Pack for a Budget Surf Trip (Without Overpacking)

When it comes to packing for a trip, I’m guilty of overpacking and filling my backpack with clothes I never even wear. 

On my first budget trip to Central America, I had a 75-liter backpack and a surfboard bag with tow boards!! It was a nightmare carrying all this gear while chasing down buses and trains! 

Let’s talk must-have surf gear first.

Always bring your personal essentials: leash, wax, rash guard, and a good pair of boardshorts or a surf bikini you actually like paddling in.

I always pack two leashes now. Once in El Zonte, El Salvador, my leash snapped mid-session. Lesson learned.

Unless you’re going somewhere remote with limited surf infrastructure, you can rent boards and sometimes even wetsuits locally.

Personally, I love bringing my board and wetsuit anywhere I go. Just becuase it’s gear im use to and won’t have any supries with it. But if you’re only going for a couple of weeks renting is a great option. 

Plus it saves these annoying surfboard fees at the airport.

That leads me to the surfboard bag…

If you decide to travel with a surfboard, Do not cheap out on your surfboard bag. Seriously. Mine’s saved my board multiple times during hectic layovers and tuk-tuk rides across Sri Lanka. 

Now let’s nerd out on travel-size surf accessories.

A ding repair kit is non-negotiable if you’re heading to reef breaks or traveling long-term. I keep a tiny stash of Solarez UV resin, spare fin screws, and a wax comb in a small zip pouch that lives in my board bag.

Budgeting Tips for Surf Travel Success

Budgeting for a surf trip dosen’t have to be so complicated. When you’re on a vacation it’s easy to just spend whatever you want but when it’s your lifestyle you need to think about where your money is going.

Espically in places where everyone is coming there for a holiday (ehm ehm…Bali) 

Let’s start with daily cost breakdowns, which are super helpful when planning.

When traveling to affordable surf spots like Sri Lanka, Nicaragua, or southern Portugal, I usually try to stay under $30- $40 USD a day.

When budgeting your daily cost of living keep in mind extra things like the occusional coffee or beer. I’m not saying include everything in your budget (unless you want to be that strickt) but in general leave some extra dollars for “unexpected cravings”. 

For example, a coffee in Sri Lanka would cost $4 while an all you can eat buffet costs only $3!!

Now you can imagine it adding up (speaking as a coffee addict here!) 

Surfboard transport

Surfboard transport is where things can get sneaky expensive. Airlines love to charge random fees for board bags. I’ve been charged $50 one way and $0 the next—same bag, different airline. 

What’s worked best for me is:

Booking with surfer-friendly airlines like Delta Airlines or LATAM. Always check the airline policy before booking. 

Packing light so your board bag doubles as your luggage—clothes, towel, wax, everything goes in. 

Buying a used board locally if I’m staying long and selling it before I leave (this worked great in Australia) 

Always track your expenses, whether you’re using a simple Notion template or have a specific app like Spendee.

Setting a realistic budget vs. your dream budget

If you plan based on how cheap things could be, you’re gonna end up broke or frustrated.

I always build in wiggle room.

If I think I can live on $30 a day, I budget for $40. It covers unexpected costs—like ding repairs, day trips, or bailing on a sketchy hostel for something cleaner.

How to Save on Surf Accommodation

Accommodation is one of the biggest expenses in your daily budget. You can always find cheap places to sleep but the goal is to get better value for money. 

Believe me, I’ve booked $6 hostels only to end up looking for a different place to sleep the same night. Oh, and I didn’t get any refund either, by the way. 

Here’s what to look for: 

Homestays

Homestays are amazing too, especially in Sri Lanka or Indonesia, where families often cook for you and the vibe feels like home.

If you’re traveling as a couple or want a little more chill, they’re golden.

Camping

Now, if you’re up for it, camping near surf spots can be one of the most budget-friendly and freeing ways to stay close to the action.

Just make sure it’s legal! I’ve camped in Australia and some parts of Europe. You’ll want a lightweight tent, a decent sleeping pad, and some bug spray.

And don’t forget about portable board locks or a way to secure your gear while you sleep.

Oh, and bathrooms… check if there are any. You’ll thank yourself later. 

If you’re the type who likes a little more control (or spontaneity), you can hack your own surf-and-stay deals.

I’ll message a few surf hostels in advance and ask if they offer discounts for week-long stays or surfboard rentals bundled in. More often than not, they say yes—but only if you ask.

Surf Transport Hacks That Won’t Break the Bank

Transport is one of those sneaky costs on a surf trip that can pile up real fast if you’re not paying attention.

I once paid $45 for a one-way taxi to a surf break in southern Costa Rica… only to find out later there was a $3 colectivo that ran the exact same route.

Yep, live and learn.

Now, I travel way smarter when it comes to getting around surf regions.

The cheapest way to move around is almost always the same: local transport.

In most surf-friendly countries, think Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, you’ll find a web of local buses, mini-vans, tuk-tuks, or shared taxis that run like clockwork (well… kind of).

They’re not always the fastest or most comfortable, but they’re dirt cheap. I’ve taken buses with my board bag strapped to the roof, wedged between sacks of rice and someone’s cousin. It’s chaotic but kind of beautiful.

Tuk-tuks and scooter taxis are great for short-distance transport.

Just remember to agree on the price before you hop in. A friendly “too much, my friend!” usually gets a laugh and a lower rate.

When should you rent a scooter or car?

Honestly, if you’re in one spot for more than a few days and the surf is spread out, rent the scooter. It gives you the freedom to chase tides and winds without relying on anyone else.

Just make sure your board fits safely—invest in soft racks or a side rack.

Renting a car? That’s more for trips with buddies or if you’re lugging multiple boards and camping gear. I once rented a car in Nicaragua with 3 random people I met on a ferry to go on an adventure you can reach only by car.

Affordable Surf Gear Tips & DIY Fixes

If you’re trying to save cash, buying second-hand surf gear abroad can be gold.

Facebook Marketplace and local surf shops are the first places I check, especially in places like Bali, Lisbon, or San Juan del Sur, where surf tourists are always coming and going. 

You’ll want to check the rails, pressure dings, and especially the fin boxes. You can even ask for a “test ride.” Most surf shops will charge you as if you’re renting it for a day if you don’t end up buying it.  

Now let’s talk DIY board fixes. If you travel long enough, something will break—it’s not if, it’s when. I keep a tiny repair kit in my board bag at all times:

A tube of Solarez or Ding All Sun Cure

Some sandpaper (80 grit and 120 grit)

A plastic scraper or old credit card

Q-tips and a tiny bottle of alcohol for cleaning the ding 

Or I’d buy a travel repair kit that includes all of this in one package. 

You’d be amazed how often this kit saves a session. One time in Nicaragua, I patched up a rail ding with Solarez on the porch of my hostel, used a spoon to smooth it, and had it cured by the time my banana pancakes were ready.

Coworking Surf Communities

Now, here’s a seriously underrated budget tip: bartering.

If you’ve got a skill—photography, web design, massage therapy, even just cleaning—you can sometimes trade for free surf lessons, board rentals, or accommodation.

I once traded blog help for a week’s stay at a surf hostel in Morocco. Another time, I filmed surf content for a guy in Costa Rica and he let me borrow a board for the whole week.

Just don’t come across like a freeloader—offer real value and be upfront about your skills.

Look for facebook gorups specific for the area your going for example “Surfing in Sri Lanka” or “backpackers Nicaragua”. 

Join anything that might be relevant to you and start connecting with people. 

Another way is to go on work-exchange website like workaway where people post their looking for a certain skill ir general help in exchange of free accomedation or food or sometimes both.

From beginner-friendly beach breaks to slabby point breaks, Australia is one of the best surfing destantions in the world. 

The continent get pretty consistent swell year-round. Although, places like the Gold Coast and Bells Beach only light up when all the elemnts align.

In this guide, we’ll take you deep into the Aussie surf culture, explore epic breaks across every coast, and help you plan a surf trip that matches your skill level and spirit.

Get ready to a dream surf in Australia, let’s go! 

Where are the best surf spots in Australia? 

Australia is a huge continent. Listing all the best spots would be a very long list indeed. 

I will highlight some of the best spots in every state, along with some hidden gems I discovered on the road. 

Honestly, there are some spots that I can’t even name. I drive thousands of kilometers and stopped at random beaches to surf. 

So I’ll leave it up to you to explore a bit. 

Western Australia Surfing

There’s a reason they say “west is best” in Australia. 

The west coast of Australia is wild, rugged, and full of potential setups. 

Margret River 

Margaret River isn’t just a wine region—it’s a heavy hitter on the world surf stage.

Hosting WSL events and drawing the best surfers in the world. While you’ll mostly find heavy reef breaks and hollow waves here, there are still some beginner friendly spots. 

When it comes to surfing in the Margret River region, there are plenty of options. Here are a few: 

Main break- Thick and heavy when big, not a beginner-friendly spot. 

The Box- only works on certain conditions and will challenge even the best in the world. 

River mouth- beginner friendly spot on smaller days. 

The Red Bluff

Surfing in Red Bluff was one of the most epic adventure I’ve ever done. 

Getting there is a mission and you can forget about phone reception and flushing toilets. This place is as rugged as it can get. 

The wave is a heavy left-hand point break. Definitely not a beginner-friendly one. 

Going in and out to the spot through a keyhole in the reef means you’ll need to time you’re paddle and be very comfortable with the reef. 

If you like remote places, don’t miss out on this one!

Geraldton

Often overlooked, Geraldton has some surprisingly punchy beach breaks and reef setups—especially when the wind cooperates (which, to be fair, is rare). Chek out: 

Flat Rocks – Consistent left-hander that works on various tides

Back Beach – The go to spot when everywhere is flat. A moody beach break that can deliver some heavy waves when the elements align. 

South Australia Surfing

SA keeps a low profile, but the waves? Loud and proud.

It’s a state full of hidden gems and heavy beach breaks, ideal for surfers who like solitude and don’t mind chilly water. 

Oh and it’s the sharkiest water in Australia so… 

Some known spots include:

Cactus Beach –  Long lefts, A-Frames and heavy tubes all in one bay.

Waitpinga Beach – Raw beachie energy close to Adelaide. Heavy when it’s on.

Middleton – Softer and cruisier. Good for learning or just logging some mellow rides.

Victoria Surfing

Victoria is the birthplace of Aussie surf culture. Only an hour from Melbourne, brand names like Rip Curl and Quiksilver started in Torquay town. And it’s easy to see why. 

The Southern Ocean delivers raw, consistent swell, and there are waves all over the coastline.

You’ll need a good wetsuit—and maybe a bit of courage. Check out: 

Bells Beach – Australia’s most famous wave. Long rights and legendary status.

Torquay – The birthplace of iconic surf brands, plenty of waves to be found.

Johanna – Remote beach break with power. Bells’ big-swell backup.

New South Wales Surfing 

If surfing were a religion, NSW would be the holy land.

From the laid-back points of Byron Bay to the city breaks of Sydney and the punchy reefs further south, this stretch of coast is pure surf culture. 

It’s the most accessible surf zone in Australia, perfect for beginners surf schools and surf camps, pros chasing barrels, and everyone in between chasing good times.

Sydney

Sydney is home to world-class surf spots. Some would argue i has the best surfing in Australia. 

For me it’s not the case but I can see it being on of the best surf locations in the country. 

Big waves, small waves, gentle waves or slabby heavy waves Sydney has it all. Some of the spots are: 

Manly Beach- Manly beach is perfect for all levels but really gets fired up when the swell picks up a bit.

The ease of getting there and the fact there’s plenty of surf schools and shops around make it one of the more crowded spots in the city, 

Bondi Beach- even before coming to Australia I used to watch the bondi beach rescue. I never though that one day ill see those guys in person haha. 

Anyway as for the surf, it’s a beach break with a beginner friendly spots in the south side of the bay (vloser to the rocks). 

It’s a great spot to learn to surf. 

Some other spots in the city include Avalon, Whale Beach and Freshwater.

Byron Bay

Some consider Byron Bay to be the hippie town of Australia, and as soon as you get there, you’ll understand why. 

The vibe is laid back and seems as if the only worry is whether you’ll order an avo toast or a smoothie bowl for breaky. 

In the water, though it’s a bit different, the crowds are gnarly and often unforgiving. Here are some spots in town: 

The Pass- Byron’s most iconic wave. A long, peeling right-hand point break that’s perfect for all levels.

 On smaller days, it’s a paradise for longboarders; when it’s bigger, shortboarders can carve down the line for ages. Expect big crowds and a cruisy vibe.

Wategos Beach- Wategos is sheltered and super mellow wave. Great for beginners and longboarders looking to glide on small, clean waves.

Belongil Beach- Located just north of the main town, Belongil has fun sandbanks and fewer people than The Pass. Good for early learners and those looking for a bit more space.

Lennox Head

A world-class right-hand point that’ll test your timing and your patience. Less forgiving than Byron, more rewarding if you nail it. 

Queensland Surfing

Queensland is Australia’s tropical surf playground.

With year-round sunshine, crystal-clear water, and some of the longest rides in the country, it’s no wonder this coast is a magnet for wave lovers from around the world. 

From the high-performance proving grounds of the Gold Coast to the dreamy, cruisy lines up north in Noosa, QLD serves up surf for every level.

Whether you’re chasing barrels, nose rides, or just your first green wave, you’ll find something that fits. 

The Gold Coast 

This is the epicenter of performance surfing in Australia. The Gold Coast is packed with punchy points and beach breaks—and yes, also packed with people. But if you don’t mind sharing, the payoff is worth it.

Snapper Rocks / Superbank – Possibly the longest wave in Australia. Snapper links into Greenmount, Kirra, and beyond on the right swell. Expect crowds and pros in the lineup.

Burleigh Heads – Classic right-hand point with a solid barrel section. Great for intermediate to advanced surfers when it’s firing.

Currumbin Alley – Mellow inside section perfect for learners, but with a fun wall further out for those who can paddle deeper.

Sunshine Coast 

About three hours north of the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast is like its slower version. It’s perfect for road-tripping surfers or those looking to escape the bustle.

Alexandra Headland (Alex) – Fun, consistent right-handers that are forgiving for learners but fun for all levels.

Mooloolaba Beach – Soft, cruisy waves great for logging and beginners.

Point Cartwright – Harder to score but worth it when it’s on! Hollow right-hander. Less crowded and more powerful than nearby breaks.

Noosa Heads

Noosa is a national treasure for longboarders and anyone who loves a mellow peel. On a solid east swell, the points here can connect into rides that go forever (or at least feel like it). The whole area is part surf spot, part zen retreat.

First Point – Dreamy right-hand point break perfect for longboarding. Smooth, slow, and beautifully lined up.

Tea Tree Bay – Inside Noosa National Park, this break offers slightly more power and speed, with a more adventurous paddle-out.

Granite Bay – More exposed and a bit punchier. Less crowded due to the hike in, and rewarding when it’s on.

Tasmania Surfing 

Still on my bucketlist, Tasmania is a wild surf destenation and not for the fain harted. Unfortantly, this time I had to skip it but I will be back Tasi! 

Tasmania’s surf scene is about quality over quantity. It’s cold, remote, and not always forgiving—but if you’re chasing raw beauty and serious slabs, Tassie delivers.

Shipstern Bluff – Home of the mutant step. Watch it from a boat unless you’re a pro.

Clifton Beach – Consistent and beginner-friendly, just outside Hobart.

Marrawah – Wild west coast waves with barely anyone around. 

 Best Time to Surf in Australia

With thousands of kilometers of coastline and multiple swell sources, Australia has somewhere to surf all year round. But choosing the best time will heavily depend on your skill level. Here’s an overview: 

• Best for Beginners: November to February (smaller swells, warmer water, surf schools in full swing)

• Best for Big Swells: May to October (east coast cyclone leftovers + winter power on west/south coasts)

• Avoiding Crowds: Hit popular spots mid-week or off-peak months like February or November

• Shark Awareness: Avoid murky water, river mouths, and dawn/dusk sessions, especially in WA & SA 

Best Surf Camps In Australia 

Australia is a one of the best places in the world to learn how to surf. 

And there’s no better way of doing it than going on a surf camp!

A lot of beaches in places like Sydney, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast to name a few have easy access to the beach, making it easy for first timers ro exeprince surfing.

A couple of years ago, on my big surf trip, I had a brush with the kind of fear that gets under your skin and lingers.

I was in El Salvador, surfing El Sunzal, a spot that most surfers know for its long right-handers and mellow vibe.

But not that day. That day, El Sunzal had other plans.

The swell had pulsed overnight, and by mid-morning, the ocean was flexing. Double overhead sets rolled in, detonating off the point.

The seawall was doing something seawalls do best. It was sending backwash waves crashing into the oncoming sets, creating chaotic peaks that bounced and folded like origami.

It was beautiful. It was terrifying.

I’d already scored a couple of solid rides and was feeling that sweet post-drop high. I paddled back out, hunting for one more.

Funny how it’s always the classic “just one more” story.

I saw a wave shaping up, late but makeable. I committed. But as I tried to stick the drop, I hit the lip at a weird angle. It was like the bottom fell out. I freefell, landed hard, and then snap — my leash gave out.

Suddenly, it was just me and the open water. No board. No flotation. At least 500, maybe 700 meters from shore.

I started swimming. As calmly and efficiently as possible.

But every set that rolled in dragged me deeper. I’d surface gasping, only to be hit by another.

The backwash would slam into me from behind, sending me back out to sea. It felt like the ocean didn’t want to let me go.

That’s when the panic crept in. I’m not proud of it, but I started thinking: Maybe this is it.

It’s a weird thing, feeling your strength fading while the horizon stays endlessly far away.

I kept telling myself, “Just make it to the next lull. Just one more breath.”

Then, like some kind of miracle, a rogue wave washed me toward shore. It dumped me right on top of a shallow sandbank. I planted my feet, chest heaving, heart pounding, and just stood there… stunned.

No time to celebrate. Another set was charging in.

I scrambled to the rocks, stumbling like a drunk, knees shaking. But I made it. I was out.

And I was alive.

What Near-Drowning Experience While Surfing Taught Me

We love to romanticize surfing. The freedom. The connection to nature. The endless chase. And yeah, it’s all of that.

But the ocean? She doesn’t care who you are. She doesn’t care how many hours you’ve logged in the lineup. One slip, one broken leash, one unlucky current, and you’re on your own.

Since that day, I’ve never paddled out without checking my leash. I take note of every exit point. I don’t chase “just one more wave” when I’m already gassed.

Because the ocean? She gives, and she takes.

And I’m grateful — so damn grateful — that on that day in El Salvador, she gave me one more chance.

Nicaragua is a volcanic country located in Central America, between Costa Rica and Honduras.

It’s famous for having one of the biggest lakes in the world (Lake Nicaragua), picturesque colonial cities, over 300 days of offshore winds, and more active volcanoes than you’ll ever need to see.

This guide is built for surfers and travelers who want to balance epic sessions with chill time, local eats, and the occasional jungle hike or lagoon dip.

How To Get To Nicaragua?

First, you’ll fly into Managua, the largest city in Nicaragua, and its capital.. I like to compare flights through two sites, Skyscanner and WayAway. 

Over three and a half years of traveling, I’ve compared endless flights but always ended up booking on one of the two websites mentioned above. 

I recommend using incognito mode for your search. Also, avoid booking on holidays and weekends. Booking in advance can save you big bucks on your trip to Nicaragua. 

Day 1 – Arrive in Managua & Travel to Playa El Gigante

After your day in Managua, you’ll need to figure out your transport to El Gigante.

Here are your shuttle options:

1) Take the public bus– by far the most affordable way, yet not the most comfortable one.

You’d have to take a bus to Rivas, the nearest town to Playa El Gigante and catch another smaller bus (aka, chicken bus) from there to the small fishing town of El Gigante.  All in all it will cost you around 10-15,$ depending on your luggage. 

2) Take a shuttle service—this is the best value deal. Many shuttle services operate throughout Nicaragua. You can also ask your hotel or hostel if they offer a shuttle. Usually, they do for an extra $$$. This service usually costs $50-70. 

3) Take a private taxi—Now, if you’re feeling boji, you can get your own taxi. This is the most direct and convenient way, but it’s going to cost you more. Private taxis usually cost about $120-150. 

Where to Stay In Playa El Gigante:

• Budget: Gigante Bay Hostel – social, barefoot vibe.
• Couples: Amarillo Surf Camp – tucked in the jungle, peaceful.
• Luxury: Hacienda Amarilla del Mar – beachfront, eco-conscious and stunning.

Days 1-3 – Playa El Gigante: Slow Days & Empty Lineups

A classic surfer town. Mellow, sandy, and perfect for kicking off your two week itinerary.

Just in front of the village there’s a perfect beach break for beginners. For the more advanced surfers, you can walk about 30 minutes along the beach and you’ll reach one of the most perfect beach breaks in the world, Playa Colorados. 

A heavy barreling wave that challenges even the most advanced surfers on a good day. 

In the same stretch of beach, you have another wave called Panga Drops, a horseshoe-shaped reef break with peeling lefts and rights.

When the tide’s wrong or the arms are toast, go hiking in the hills behind town or take a fishing trip with locals.

What to do in Playa el Gigante:

• Horseback rides along the beach
• Sunset hike to the clifftop lookout
• Yoga sessions at Giant’s Foot Surf

Places to Eat in playa el gigante:

• Juntos: Fish tacos, smoothies, and chill jungle seating.
• Dale Pues Café: Burritos, cold drinks, and surf camp energy

Days 4-6 – Popoyo: Reef Breaks & Natural Hot Springs

A short drive north brings you to Popoyo, a sleepy surf zone with a surprising amount of punch. The main reef fires on mid to high tide and holds size well. For something gentler, check out Beginner Bay, just a 10-minute walk down the beach.

Just like Playa Gigante, Popoyo is only a strech of dusty road with hostels and resturants scattered across.

It’s wild and remote so be ready for some rural Nicaraguan experince. 

When the surf dies down, soak in Popoyo’s natural hot springs, hit a yoga class, or walk out to the tide pools during sunset.

Where to Stay In popoyo:

• Budget: Hostal Popoyo – rustic and steps from the beach.
• Couples: Malibu Popoyo – stylish surf retreat.
• Surf camp: Magnific Rock – cliffside, panoramic views, with lessons and rentals.

Where to eat In popoyo:

• Finca Wayuu: Healthy bowls, smoothies, and veggie-friendly.
• Cafe Con Leche: Coffee, breakfast, and post-surf snacks.

Days 6–9 – Ometepe Island: Volcanic Vibes & Laid-Back Lagoons

By now you’re probably surfed out, so it’s time to explore Nicaragua’s volcanic heart: Ometepe Island, formed by two volcanos in Lake Nicaragua.

Head back to Rivas and continue down the main road to a small town called San Jorge where you’ll catch a ferry to the Island. 

Once on the Island, you can rent a scooter or take a tuk-tuk to your accommodation. 

Where to Stay In Ometpe:

• Budget: El Zopilote Hostel – permaculture vibes, yoga, and treehouse-style stays.
• Couples: Totoco Eco-Lodge – jungle bungalows with sweeping volcano views and sustainable comfort.

What To Do In Ometpe:

• Hike Volcán Concepción through cloud forests and howler monkey territory.

Story time- Volcán Concepción was the first ever volcano that I had attempted to ascend.

There are two ways to climb to the top of this mountain, and both of them include a local guide.

I’m not too sure whether you could climb it by yourself.

At one point, you’ll reach a hut in the mountains, where you must pay a small fee. Without a guide, they won’t let you go any further.

So book a tour guide just to be safe.

Also, this is an active volcano. While you won’t see lava, an eruption could happen at any second, and nothing is better than local knowledge when things go downhill.

But don’t worry, it has been dormant for years now.

Other things to do in Ometepe

• Take a dip in Ojo de Agua, a crystal-clear natural spring perfect for cooling off.
• Explore Charco Verde, a mystical reserve with trails, turtles, and butterflies.
• Rent a motorbike and ride the island loop – volcanoes on one side, lake on the other.

Day 9-11 Staying in Granada: Color, Culture, and Colonial Vibes

Granada is where Nicaragua shows off its charm. Cobblestone streets, stunning colonial architecture, and the scent of fresh tortillas drifting from street stalls—it’s the kind of place that feels both lively and laid-back.

Whether you’re into photography, food, or just aimless wandering, Granada delivers.

Where to Stay in granada:

• Budget: Selina Granada – stylish dorms and private rooms, rooftop pool, and a social vibe right in the city center.
• Mid-Range: Hotel con Corazón – eco-friendly, community-focused, and super comfy.
• Luxury: Tribal Hotel – boutique, design-forward, and Instagram-ready.

Things to Do in Granada:

• Explore the city on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. The architecture alone is worth the trip.
• Visit the Cathedral of Granada at sunset—it lights up in gold from the top of the bell tower.
• Hop on a boat tour through Las Isletas, a group of tiny islands scattered across Lake Nicaragua.
• Grab a smoothie or a Toña at one of the cafés along Calle La Calzada and people-watch to your heart’s content.
• Catch live music or salsa nights, especially on weekends when the town really comes alive.

Days 11–14 Treehouse Escape Near Granda

This was hands down one of the best experiences I’ve had in Central America.

As a kid, I always dreamed of living in a treehouse—and for the first time, that dream actually came true.

Tucked into the trees just outside the city of León, this off-grid eco-lodge lets you unplug, unwind, and soak up the last few days of Nicaragua in peace. 

The hostel has a cool vibe, not only because of the location. Every day they have a different menu, and it’s a surprise. The food is delicious and fresh. 

Also, at night they have social nights where they organize games, events, and every Friday there’s a jungle rave! 

Oh, and there’s a zipline as well! 

Side note here- there is about three tree houses and they get booked fast. so get your place secured while you can. 

Where to Stay:

• The Treehouse Nicaragua – rustic cabins perched in the canopy, epic sunsets, and a front-row seat to howler monkey wake-up calls.

What to Do:

• Chill in a hammock with a cold Toña and a volcano backdrop.
• Join a sunset yoga session on the deck or a jungle hike through the private trails.
• Meet fellow travelers during the nightly campfire or community dinner.
• Want one last adrenaline kick? Book a volcano boarding day trip to nearby Cerro Negro Volcano.

Getting Back to Managua

From the Treehouse, head back to Granada and make your way to Managua by car or shuttle. It’s a ~1-hour drive, so plan accordingly before your flight.

                                November–March for cleaner, smaller waves.

Think finishing a surf session in Sicily and grabbing a perfect Italian pizza while still in your wetsuit!  Yes, that’s the vibe. 

This post will focus on the most popular surf spots in the Med, because, with a sea as fickle as the Med you need to be in the right place at the right time! Otherwise, you’ll miss it! 

Ok, let’s talk! 

One OF The Best surf spots in the Mediterranean – Sardinia 

Sardinia is an Italian island located south-west of Rome. The constant Mistral wind is the major factor in the quality and quantity of waves on the Sardinian coast. 

The Mistral is a powerful, cold wind that blows from the north or northwest, sweeping down from southern France into the Gulf of Lyon in the northern Mediterranean Sea. 

Spots like Buggerru, Portixeddu, and Capo Mannu deliver solid waves in winter.

The West Coast is mostly wild and untouched. leaving a great deal of unexplored surf breaks. 

I recommend renting a car for the best chance of scoring waves. 

If you go there in wintertime (Peak surf season, low tourist season), you can find amazing deals on car rentals! 

I paid 5 euros a day for the car and then another 5 euros for insurance. That’s 10 euros a day to rent a car! To me, that was amazing at the time. 

Oh, and did i mention a flight cost me 22 Euros? Yup, winter is the best! 

Spanish Mediterranean- Barcelona

Barcelona is home to several beaches, but only a few offer good conditions for surfing.

Barceloneta is the most central, with rentals nearby and mellow swells perfect for surfers of all levels.

Bogatell is slightly less crowded and also offers calm waters, while Llevant, the furthest out, rarely gets any big surf unless storms roll in.

For more powerful and consistent waves, you’ll need to venture outside the city.

Castelldefels to the south is ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers, with long, spacious stretches and regular swells. 

Másnou, located north, attracts experienced riders and can get crowded when the surf is good. 

Most spots are fairly easily reachable by train, making day trips from Barcelona a great option to catch some decent waves on the Mediterranean coast. 

More Than Ancient Ruins Greece- Crete

Greece is known for its blue rooftops, lazy beach days, and ancient history, but did you know you can also surf there? 

Yes, the Island of Crete, specifically the island’s west coast, has a lot of potential. 

While you won’t score any barrels or head hight waves, the novlty of catching waves in a place like Crete is worth it! 

Come winter, westerly wind swells roll in strong, delivering shoulder-high waves over mostly sandy bottoms, though some rocks do creep into the lineup.

Falasarna, sitting on Crete’s wild western edge, is a jaw-dropping spot with golden sands, mountain backdrops, and even ancient ruins nearby. 

Further south, Palaiochora faces directly west and can catch the occasional clean swell during winter storms. It’s best suited for beginners and intermediates, but with no local rentals or surf schools, you’ll need to bring your own gear or join a surf tour.

The East Side- Israel

Sitting on the east side of the Mediterranean, Israel gets a fair bit of swell year-round. While most of the year it’s small to meduim size waves (sometimes completly flat) it’s still on the surfing map. 

It hosts the surfing championship in Netanya. 

Their are many beaches to explore in Israel. If you’re heading north then Haifa is your best bet. 

With places like Nirvana Beach, The Peak, and Backdoor being the most popular beaches in town. 

Further south, you’ll find Bet Yanay, Natanya, and Tel Aviv. These are all places with great quality waves. 

In Tel-Aviv, check out Hilton Beach for a perfect right-hand reef break suitable for advanced surfers. It’s known to be one of the best places to surf in Israel. 

Just south of Tel Aviv, Maravi Beach is a sandy stretch known for its winter swells and fun, surfable waves in the warmer months. It’s one of the more consistent spots in the area, with both lefts and rights breaking near the stone jetties.

Travel North To- Lebanon 

Now, I’ve never surfed in Lebanon, although it’s literally 2 hours from my hometown, Haifa. But I know for a fact that there are really good waves to be found. 

All the swell coming towards the Israeli coast hits the Lebanese coast without any interruption and with the same force. 

For the best chance of scoring waves, hit the town of Jiyeh. It offers a wide bay with beach breaks that could rival those on the Atlantic Coast.

Byblos, a UNESCO-listed city dating back to 5,000 BC, has a west-facing beach that draws both tourists and surfers.

Nearby, Batroun—another ancient coastal town—hosts a tight-knit surf scene with small coves that produce fun, clean waves for all levels.

The surf culture in Lebanon is booming with men and women from all ages, religous and belifes gathering to celebrate the true freedom of riding waves. 

Best Time To Surf In The Mediterranean

The best time to surf in the Mediterranean is during the winter months, from November to March.

This is when strong wind systems and winter storms generate more consistent swells across the region.

While summer can occasionally bring rideable waves, especially in spots with local wind swell, winter is when the Med truly comes alive for surfers chasing clean, powerful sets.

So… Can You Actually Surf in the Med?

Yes, you definitely can! 

Here’s the thing, being a Sea, the primary swells that provide solid waves are wind generated swells. As oppuse to ground swells that preformed in bigger body of water like the Ocean.

But what does that mean? 

Well it means a couple of things. Becuase of the size of the Med the swells physically can’t travel long distances. Which means shorter periods. 

Now, if you’re an experienced surfer, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If you’re a beginner, I suggest you have a look at this quick guide to wave reading. 

Keeping it simple, shorter periods usually mean weaker waves. 

Now that doesn’t mean it’s not surfable. As a Mediterranean surfer anything over 7s period is surfable. 

To put this into perspective, if you’re surfing in Portugal you’ll most likely surf swells with at least 10s +.

Best spots For surfing the Mediterranean Sea

There are good waves to be found all over the Med coastline. Here is your starting point:

Spain

Spain’s Mediterranean coast offers small but surfable waves, especially in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, like Mallorca.

You’ll need to chase winter storms, but when they hit, beaches like Barceloneta or Cala Mesquida light up with clean, uncrowded peaks—perfect for longboarders or relaxed shortboard sessions in a stunning cultural setting.

France

Corsica is a hidden surf paradise with crystal-clear water and dramatic backdrops. While the swell is not as consistent as the Atlantic coast, you’ll still find quality beach breaks and point setups.

It’s ideal for surfers who crave adventure, solitude, and the wild Mediterranean feel without the crowds of mainland France.

Italy 

Italy is the mainstream surfing destination for Med surfers.  

Sardinia picks up wind swell from multiple directions, offering surprisingly good surf in places like Capo Mannu.

Sicily adds volcanic scenery to the mix, with fun waves near Catania and Palermo. These islands deliver charm, culture, and an authentic off-the-beaten-path surf trip.

Greece

Greece isn’t just about ancient ruins and island hopping—there’s surf too. Crete gets regular wind swell in winter, while the Peloponnese and Athens’ coastline offer rideable waves when storms roll in.

With 910 KM (that’s 565 miles, my American readers) of coastline, there are so many surf breaks in Nicaragua that it’s impossible to name them all in this guide.

Whether you like reef breaks, river mouths, or a punchy beach break, you’re guaranteed to find your dreamy wave here. 

Popoyo

I still remember my first surf at Playa Popoyo — and yeah, it lived up to the hype.

The wave is consistent, punchy, and honestly a bit humbling if you’re not dialed in. 

First off, the paddle out is easy enough with the current doing most of the work. The sketchy part is going in while it’s low tide.

Just wait for the right moment and paddle as hard as you can to the shore. 

It can take a couple of sessions before you’ll be dialed in on this wave but that’s the fun part. 

What makes Popoyo so special is that it just works — all tides, most swell directions, and it holds size like a champ. I’ve surfed it waist-high and head-and-a-half, and it still kept its shape. 

Now, Popoyo isn’t for beginners. It’s a steep and hollow wave. 

I’d say it’s best for intermediate to advanced surfers who are comfortable in reef breaks and can handle a bit of punch.

But if you’re newer, there’s a mellow inside wave and a spot literally called Beginners Bay just a short walk away — perfect for practicing pop-ups and getting your confidence up.

The Boom (Chinandega)

The Boom in Chinandega is a heavy beach break that barrels fast and throws hard. 

Like any other beach break, it can be fickle. Managing the currents, picking the best sand bank, and waiting for the right wave is something you’ll do a lot at the boom. 

But man, when it lines up, it’s pure magic.

We’re talking hollow waves, clean tubes, and that heart-thumping moment when you actually make the drop.

If you’re into surf photography, this place is gold. I watched a guy get two back-to-back barrels right in front of a drone — it looked like something out of a surf mag.

This spot’s best for advanced surfers with quick reflexes and solid board control. You’ll want a shorter board, something that can fit tightly in the pocket. Also, I’ve seen a fair bit of broken boards, just saying. 

Definitely not a place to mess around. But if you’re chasing that adrenaline rush and you’ve got the skills? The Boom delivers.

Playa Colorado 

Playa Colorado is another punchy beach break that’s known for steep, hollow barreling waves. 

Just like the boom, Playa Colorado is a fickle and tricky wave to surf. First off, timing the paddle out is crucial. 

Otherwise you might end up getting a heavy lip on your head or your board, trust me it hurts! 

Then, catching the wave is all about positioning and technique. If you want to practice your barrel riding, this place is like a gym! 

The beach itself is a private beach (a common thing in Nicaragua) that means that most of the hotels or Airbnbs on the beach are private and yes EXPENSIVE. 

I’ve seen a lot of people share a house which can really offset the costs. 

As for me, I stayed at Playa Gigante and it was about 30 min walk to get to Playa Colorado but guess what, it’s worth it!! 

You can also rent a motorbike for about 20$ a day (I was there 2 years ago so don’t take me up on numbers here). It’ll make this 30+ min walk an easy 5-10 min ride. 

Panga Drops

Panga Drops is located about a 5 min walk down the beach from Playa Colorado. 

The wave breaks over a horse shoe shaped reef and forms leg burner A-Frame best suited for more experienced surfers. 

The paddle out is fairly easy but the trick is to position yourself correctly once in the lineup. My first couple of waves there were good but once I got the hang of that break it was a blast! 

That said, it can get a bit too big at times and  tricky to surf with the currents and big sets. 

It breaks on all tide although better Mid-High tide. 

As always, check the forecast and once you’re at the beach, stop, do some stretching and study the wave before paddling out. 

Playa El Gigante 

Playa El Gigante is a quiet fishing village about an hour north of San Juan Del Sur. 

You won’t find anything fancy here, just dusty roads and free-roaming animals. It’s like stepping back in time, and it’s truly magical. 

A couple of minutes from the village is the surfing beach. It offers a punchy beach break and a mellower wave closer to the rocks.

You can either get here by bus from the closest big city Rivas or with a taxi from either Rivas or San Juan Del Sur. 

One thing to note here is that Playa El Gigante is a bit sheltred from the South-Westrly swells that hit the Nicarguan coast so often times it’ll be smaller than the neighboring Playa Colrado. Which is great for beginner! 

When Is The Best Time to Surf in Nicaragua?

Timing your trip around the best time to surf in Nicaragua can seriously change your whole experience. 

Dry season (November to April) the waves are a bit smaller and more manageable, which makes it great if you’re still building confidence.

But, here’s the thing. Because of the unique geography in Nicaragua, especially in the south part near Lake Nicaragua. The dry season is not like any other in Central America. 

You almost feel like it’s a desert, and due to the high offshore winds it create an effect known as upwilling where the surface layer gets pushed away and replaced by colder water coming from deeper water. 

Wet season (May to October), on the other hand, is for the swell chasers and best waves. 

Waves get bigger, faster, and sometimes a little sketchier. Everything’s greener,  and more raw.

I scored Playa Colorado in July after a thunderstorm and it was firing — heavy beach break barrels and total jungle vibes.

If you’re not picky, the shoulder months like April, and December can offer the best of both. Moderate swell, clean conditions, and fewer tourists.

Just don’t forget: tides and swell direction matter more than the season. West and southwest swells tend to hit best, and certain spots light up on mid to high tide.

Always check the local forecast before heading out — it’ll save you a wasted paddle.

Where to Stay on a Surf Trip in Nicaragua?

When I planned my first surf trip to Nicaragua, figuring out where to stay was honestly the trickiest part. Not because it hard, there’s so many options.

As you can see from the picture above, I stayed in an eco tent and even a carvan!

You’ve got a mix of surf camps, budget hostels, beach bungalows, and even some pretty sweet eco-lodges.

It really comes down to your vibe. Are you chasing waves sunup to sundown, or looking to mix in some hammock time and smoothie bowls?

If it’s your first time or you want a no-brainer setup, go for a surf camp.

Places around Popoyo and Playa Maderas offer all-in packages — meals, boards, transport, lessons. Just wake up, surf, eat, repeat. Super convenient if you’re trying to make the most of a short trip.

How to Plan Your Surf Trip to Nicaragua?

Planning your surf trip to Nicaragua doesn’t have to be complicated — but there are a few key things I wish I knew before my first trip that would’ve saved me time, money, and a couple of headaches.

First off, flights: Most people fly into Managua (MGA), but if you find a cheaper ticket to Liberia, Costa Rica, it’s not a bad option — just know you’ll have to cross the border, which can take a while.

I traveled by bus so had to cross the border in. It’s a hit n miss kind of process. If there’s not a lot of people its an easy process. 

Once you’re in, transport is everything. If you’re staying at a surf camp, they’ll usually offer a shuttle — easy. 

Otherwise, renting a car or asking your accommodation for a taxi is best. 

There are plenty of taxis at the airport,t but they tend to be overpriced and “hustly”. 

Also, if you’re renting a car, opt for a 4X4. Trust me, it’ll open so many more breaks for you to explore, Nicaragua is not the most paved country in the world. 

Money-wise, bring cash (USD is accepted in most surf towns) and don’t expect ATMs in remote spots.

What to Pack? reef-safe sunscreen, zinc, and a backup leash — surf gear is pricey and not always easy to find locally.

Also, check the surf forecast ahead of time — especially tides and swell direction. Nicaragua’s breaks react differently depending on swell angle and timing. 

And last thing — don’t overbook. Leave space in your schedule for spontaneous detours. 

In short: book your basics, leave room to explore, and let the waves guide the rest.

What To Do In Nicaragua?

If you’re heading to Nicaragua for the surf, that’s already a solid choice — but there’s way more to do than just ride waves.

Volcano hikes

With about 40 volcanos, hiking at least one of them is an absolute must.

I hiked the Concepción Volcano located on Ometpe Island in Lake Nicaragua. Let me tell you, it was a tough hike but the reward is absolutely amazing!

You can even sandboard on the famous Cerro Negro Volcano!

Not for the faint-hearted, but super fun.

Eat, Eat, and Eat even more

This one is a no brainer! Nicaragua is full of freshly made local food. Anything from deep fried patagones (a type of banana) to veggie wraps you won’t get disappointed!

Look for local markets and homestay’s restaurants. While you find western restaurants I HIGHLY recommend to give the local food a chance.

Granada

Granda is another good stop — super colorful, historic, and great for photos or street food. Think old churches, colonial buildings, and cheap mojitos.

For something wild, head to Ometepe Island — two volcanoes, tons of wildlife, and a real off-the-grid vibe. Rent a scooter and explore the whole place in a day.

Bottom line? Even if you came for the waves, carve out time to explore. Nicaragua’s got layers.

Either way, winter is no doubt THE BEST season for surfing!

While I’m more of a summer person, I get excited for winter because of the waves it brings. Not all of us get excited about putting on a thick, rubbery wetsuit to catch a couple of waves before we freeze our toes. But it’s well worth the reward. 

You can also escape the cold and surf in places like Costa Rica, El Salvador, or Sri Lanka, where you still get the thrill of winter waves but no rubber involved. 

In this blog post, I’ll list the best winter surfing destinations based on my research and personal experience. So get ready to plan your winter surf trip no matter the water temperature!

1. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a top winter surf destination, and it’s easy to see why. Unlike chillier spots, the water here stays warm year-round, averaging around 80°F (27°C) even in winter.

That means no wetsuits, just board shorts and bikinis, which makes paddling out a breeze.

From November to March, consistent Pacific swells create perfect surfing conditions for all skill levels.

The vibe is laid-back and friendly, with seasoned surfers and beginners enjoying the waves together amidst lush tropical scenery and a welcoming “pura vida” attitude.. It’s the kind of place where you can surf all day and relax by the beach bonfire at night.

2. El Salvador

Just north of Costa Rica. El Salvador is a hidden gem for winter surfing, offering tropical waves without the peak-season crowds.

During the winter months, places like Punta Roca and El Sunzal still enjoy consistent swells, but the vibe is way more relaxed than in summer. Water temps hover around 82°F (28°C), so you can leave the wetsuit behind.

Punta Roca is famous for its powerful, long right-hand point breaks that attract more experienced surfers, while El Sunzal is a mellower, with gentle, rolling waves perfect for beginners and intermediates. 

The conditions are clean, and mornings often deliver glassy surf, making it ideal for catching smooth, rideable waves.

The laid-back, local surf culture means everyone’s there to have a good time, making it easy to feel at home on the breaks.

3. Australia

Australia’s east and west coasts offer fantastic winter escapes for surfers, with Noosa and Margaret River being standout spots.

Since it’s summer down under, conditions are perfect, and the water temperatures range from 72°F to 77°F (22°C – 25°C), making it comfortable for all-day surf sessions. 

Noosa, on the Sunshine Coast, is known for its long, mellow right-handers—ideal for beginners and longboarders. Also, you’ll find it wasy to rent a surfboard or get surfing lessons, so you can easily gear up and get lessons if needed.

Over on the west coast, Margaret River delivers more powerful, consistent waves, attracting more experienced surfers. You’ll find a mix of reef breaks and beach breaks, with surf shops and schools nearby to get you set up.

Other popular surf spots in Australia are Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Sydney. The list goes on and on…

4. New Zealand

New Zealand is one of the best places to surf in winter. The water stays cool but manageable, ranging from 59°F to 64°F (15°C —18°C), so a 4/3 wetsuit and maybe booties and a hoodie depending on your sensitivity to cold.  

Raglan is a must-visit surf spot. It is famous for its world-class left-hand point breaks, which offer long, consistent rides that attract surfers from all over. 

Piha, closer to Auckland, has a wilder vibe, with powerful beach breaks that suit more experienced surfers.

When it comes to exploring New Zealand’s surf, renting a camper van or a car is a popular choice, giving you the freedom to chase waves up and down the coast.

Plus, local surf shops and camps are super helpful, offering rentals, lessons, and insider tips. The surf culture is friendly, with a tight-knit community vibe, and the natural beauty—think rugged cliffs and lush green hills—makes every surf trip a bit of an adventure.

5. Morocco 

Morocco’s coastline, especially around Taghazout and Imsouane, is a top winter surf destination with warm temperatures and ideal waves. The water hovers around 64°F to 68°F (18°C – 20°C), so a light wetsuit is enough for comfort.

Taghazout is famous for its consistent right-hand point breaks, offering long, smooth rides that attract surfers from all over. It’s a great mix of spots for both beginners and advanced surfers, with surf camps catering to all skill levels.

If you’re starting out, Imsouane is perfect; its legendary long rides at the “Magic Bay” are gentle and forgiving, stretching for hundreds of meters—ideal for perfecting your technique.

The surf camps here offer packages that include lessons, board rentals, and even yoga, so you can unwind after a day on the waves.

The vibe on land is laid-back, with a mix of locals and travelers, all soaking in that easygoing Moroccan charm. In the water, I generally found the vibe to be a bit more competitive and localized in the better spots. 

6. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s surf scene, especially around Weligama and Arugam Bay, is perfect for beginners and longboarders looking for warm weather and easy waves.

The water temperature stays around a balmy 80°F (27°C) year-round, so it’s board shorts and bikinis all day. 

Weligama is the go-to spot for first-timers, with its gentle, sandy-bottom beach breaks that make learning a breeze. You’ll find plenty of surf schools here, offering lessons, rentals, and even beginner-friendly surf camps that take care of everything from coaching to accommodation.

Over on the east coast, Arugam Bay has a mix of mellow waves and more challenging breaks, giving longboarders and intermediate surfers lots to play with.

The local hospitality is something special—expect warm welcomes, home-cooked meals, and a friendly, laid-back vibe that makes you feel right at home.

7. Portugal

Portugal’s surf hubs, Ericeira and Peniche, are winter favorites for their reliable swells and mild weather. The water temps dip to around 59°F to 64°F (15°C – 18°C), so a 3/2 wetsuit is a must, but the conditions make it worth it.

Ericeira is known as Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve, with a variety of breaks that suit everyone from beginners to pros. It’s got a mix of beach breaks and reef breaks, plus a cool surf-town vibe with plenty of surf camps offering packages that cover lessons, board rentals, and accommodation.

Over in Peniche, the famous Supertubos break draws more experienced surfers with its powerful barrels, while nearby beaches provide gentler waves for learners.

Both towns have surf camps that run through winter, so you can sharpen your skills while enjoying Portugal’s chill coastal atmosphere and amazing seafood.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best spots for surfing in Central America, what makes each spot unique, and tips to make the most out of your surf trip. So grab your board, and let’s dive in!

Introduction to Surfing in Central America

First, where is Central America, and what countries fall into this region of the world? When we talk about Central America, we’re talking about Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize. 

While all of these countries have surf some are better than others and is best to know where and when to go. 

The official language is Spanish, and the currency varies from country to country, but most will happily accept US Dollars. 

When to Surf in Central America 

During the wet season in Central America, which typically runs from May to October, the South Pacific Ocean generates significant, long-period swells, resulting in waves along the Pacific beaches. 

These waves are usually around head-height but can occasionally reach well overhead.

On the other hand, the dry season, which occurs from November to April, brings clear, sunny days and consistent waist-to-shoulder-height waves, otherwise known as Shoulder Season. 

Having experienced both seasons in Central America, I can say that I have never encountered flat days or a lack of waves. With the right quiver and willingness to search for waves, you can surf every day! 

While the better surf is on the Pacific side of the countries, you don’t want to disregard the waves of the Carrebian Sea. It’s less consistent than the Pacific, but you can still score epic waves! 

The surf season in the Carrebian is shorter and runs from November to Match, but it might be inconsistent.

Ok let’s get into the best spots for surfing in Central America.

1. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Santa Teresa is a dreamy surf town on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, known for its consistent waves, gorgeous beaches, and laid-back atmosphere.

The beach breaks here are perfect for all levels, with gentle waves for beginners and bigger swells for advanced surfers. 

Beyond surfing, you can enjoy activities like yoga, horseback riding, and ATV tours through the jungle. The town has a mix of surf shops, cafes, and boutique hotels, offering everything from budget hostels to luxury resorts.

Plus, the sunsets over the Pacific are breathtaking, making it a top spot for anyone looking to blend surfing with a bit of relaxation and adventure.

2. Popoyo, Nicaragua

Popoyo is a powerful reef break that challenges even the most experienced surfers on bigger swells. It’s best known for its consistent, year-round swells, which make it ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers.

What sets Popoyo apart is its variety of breaks, including the famous Outer Reef, which delivers some of the heaviest waves in the region.

The area is relatively undeveloped, providing a more authentic and laid-back surf experience. Plus, getting there is quite an adventure by itself. 

Nearby, you can find charming local eateries, surf camps, and eco-lodges. For those looking to explore, there are hot springs, horseback riding, and day trips to nearby villages. 

For anyone looking to disconnect from the hustle of the city, Popoyo is the place to be. 

3. El Sunzal, El Salvador

El Sunzal is one of the most popular surf spots in El Salvador, known for its long, right-hand point break that caters to beginners and intermediate surfers.

The mellow, rolling waves make it a great place to practice, and the water stays warm year-round. Unique for its consistency and friendly atmosphere, El Sunzal is also close to the town of El Tunco, which has a vibrant nightlife, restaurants, and surf shops.

Besides surfing, make sure to check out the famous Tamanique Waterfall and explore the beauty of El Salvador’s Forests.

Also, don’t forget to try Poposas a delicious local dish, so simple yet so good! 

4. Bocas del Toro, Panama

Bocas del Toro is a collection of 9 islands off the carrbian cost of Panma. 

This island destination has everything from beginner-friendly waves to challenging reef breaks, making it suitable for all levels. The water is warm year round and the carrebian vibes makes you feel like you’re in a drea every single moment of the day. 

What makes Bocas stand out is its island-hopping vibe; you can explore different surf spots by boat, each with its own unique break. The main island, Isla Colon is home to the famous Playa Paunch and Playa Bluff both challenging waves recommended only for experienced surfers. 

For a beginner friendly wave visit Caranero Island a short boat ride that would cost 3-5 USD a direction and they can drop you off and pick you up from the point.

Besides surfing, there’s plenty to do: snorkeling, diving, zip-lining, and exploring the town’s lively nightlife scene. Bocas del Toro is ideal for surfers who want variety, adventure, and a laid-back island feel.

5. Playa Venao, Panama

Playa Venao is a crescent-shaped bay on Panama’s Pacific coast, known for its consistent waves that are perfect year-round. It’s suitable for all skill levels, with smaller waves for beginners and bigger swells during the wet season for more advanced surfers.

The area has a relaxed vibe, and there’s a growing surf community with a mix of hostels, eco-lodges, and luxury resorts. Unique to Playa Venao is its balance of nature and nightlife—surf by day, and dance under the stars by night.

There’s also plenty to do off the board, from canopy tours and estuary boat rides to sunset cruises. If you’re looking for a mix of easy waves, fun vibes, and convenience, Tamarindo should be at the top of your list.

7. Playa Colorado, Nicaragua

Playa Colorado is known for its fast, hollow beach break waves, making it a hotspot for more advanced surfers wanting to surf in Nicaragua . The powerful, barreling waves are consistent, especially during the dry season when offshore winds create perfect conditions.

It’s a bit off the beaten path, but can still be very crowded. What’s unique about Playa Colorado is its exclusivity; many of the best breaks are right in front of private resorts or surf camps, making it easier to catch quality waves.

If you can’t afford these type of accommodation check out the nearby village of Playa Gigante, it’s about a 30 min beach walk from Playa Colerado but you can stay there for as little as 8-10 USD a night. 

Plus, Playa Gigante gets good waves too so if you don’t feel like walking everyday you can jump straight out.

Nearby activities include golf, fishing, and exploring local markets, but most come here for the thrill of the surf. It’s the ideal spot for those seeking challenging, world-class waves in a tranquil setting.

Planning Your Surf Trip To Central America

Central America was my first ever big surf trip. I was really excited but didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was I had a one-way ticket to a place where I could score epic waves, and of course, I had the surfboard with me. 

But I would’ve planned my surf travel a bit better now that I’m more experienced with travel. So here are some tips on planning the ultimate surf trip.

Flights and Surfboard Fees

Now that you know what surf destination in Central America you want to visit, it’s time to book a flight. I recommend using Skyscanner or WayAway for this. 

I found these two apps present the best prices and generally don’t have any hidden fees. Yes, they try to upgrade you with everything from seat selection to extra baggage, but you shouldn’t be charged extra if you pay attention. 

Surfboard fees vary widely between airlines, so make sure you double-check the airline’s policies about oversized language. 

At the time, I was flying with American Airlines, and they only charged me for extra baggage, not as oversized (my surfboard was about 5’8″, so the whole bag would’ve been 6’0″). 

Accessories and Gear

So, let’s talk about accessories for a second. Don’t forget to bring anything essential with you for this trip, such as GoPros, Drones, cameras, or even a canvas and paint color, whatever you feel like. 

Also, I highly recommend using mosquito repellent and sunscreen for the strong tropical sun rays. A zinc-based sunscreen would be even better. 

Many surf towns around Central America usually have a surf shop with all the supplies you need for your gear. But it’s a good idea to pack an extra leash, fins, and even a repair kit in case something happens to your gear. 

Accommodation

As for accommodation, there’s no shortage of options here. Whether you like luxury hotels or a simple tree house, you’ll find what you are looking for. 

I would suggest looking at sites like Booking and Airbnb. 

If you’re going to stay for a longer period of time, it’s best to look in Facebook groups for shared houses or even sublets. Often, you’ll find really good deals, and you can save a lot of money while meeting new people and living like a local.

Surfboards & Gear

While most surf camps include surfboard and equipment hire in their price, it’s essential to ensure you get a board that suits your ability. 

If you’re not a complete beginner, you might consider bringing your surfboard with you. Generally speaking, all surfboards and gear (Leashes, wetsuits, etc.) are included in the surf camps mentioned above. 

But please make sure before you book that all the gear your after is included! 

Dry bag

Having a dry bag to put all your valuables in is a good idea. In case, it rains or you’re in the ocean all day where water can quickly get to your electronics, wallet, or anything else, a dry bag is an easy solution. 

Towel Or Poncho 

While it might seem obvious, the absolute worst feeling is getting out of the water all wet, salty, and cold, only to find out you forgot your towel. 

Some surf camps provide towels, but most don’t, so bring your favorite one with you. I like to have a poncho so I can easily change into and out of my wetsuit!

Also known as Point Sinclair National Surfing Reserve, this place is not just another dreamy surf break. Here, you can find waves that cater to all levels, from the mellow left to the punchy and barrelling right. Everyone will enjoy a ride!  

Getting there is no easy task, but it sure is a rewarding one. On the way, you’ll see the beauty of the desert plain, pass a pink lake, and see some amazing sand dunes.  

So let me tell you how I found this amazing surfing beach and what you should expect when surfing there. I’ll cover everything from how to get there to what to bring and the best conditions. let’s go! 

Where Is Cactus Beach Located?

Cactus Beach is Located in South Australia, about an hour’s drive from Ceduna, the “biggest” town in the area. Getting there without a car would be a real challenge. 

But techniqelly you could fly to Ceduna Airport and take an expensive taxi ride to the beach or better yet rent a car for a couple of days and explore the area. 

I stumbled upon this amazing place as i was crossing the nallabour plane, a dry story for a different blog post. But many locals have told me about this amazing surf break called Cactus Beach, so I had to check it out. 

Getting there by car is straightforward; type “Cactus Beach” on Google Maps and follow the road. Or just hit his link

As soon as you get to Penong, a small town along the highway, make sure you have all the supplies you need because there are no shops elsewhere.

 That includes water, food, snacks, fuel, or anything else you might need for a couple of days at the beach. In fact, I would suggest doing it in Ceduna, as there are more options and it is slightly less expensive. 

When Is The Best Time To Surf In Cactus Beach? 

Timing your trip with the best condition for your ability is always the trickiest part of planning a surf trip. Always be honest about your skill level and plan accordingly. Most important, be flexible as it won’t always go according to your plans but that’s the beauty of it all. 

Summer (December to February) is probably my least favorite season to visit Cactus Beach. Not only will the fly be annoying you all day, but the heat is almost unbearable. The swells can be unpredictable, and the wind often blows onshore, making it hard to score epic waves. 

Autumn (March to May) is the best time to surf at Cactus Beach. The water temps are bearable—around 19-20°C (so yeah, you’ll still need a 3/2 wetsuit)—and the swell is consistently good. You get those nice southern swells that line up perfectly with the reef breaks.

Plus, the winds tend to be offshore in the mornings, giving you that crisp, clean surf we all dream about. It’s also not as scorching hot as summer, which is a huge plus when camping out in the middle of nowhere.

Winter (June to Aug)brings colder water andbigger, gnarlier swells. You will get lucky with some epic waves, but the conditions are harsher overall. That said, there are fewer people, which can be nice.

Spring (September to November) is a bit of a wild card. You can get some decent waves, but the winds can be unpredictable. There’s something special about this time of year, though. The wildflowers in the surrounding desert start blooming, and the sunsets? Absolutely unreal.

Pro Tip: keep an eye on the swell direction. Cactus Beach works best with a southwest swell. Anything else, and you might end up with some pretty inconsistent waves. Checking the forecast before you go is a must. 

Surf Spots At Cactus Beach

This area’s coastline is full of potential waves and epic surf breaks. If you’re keen on surfing waves all to yourself and have a reliable 4WD and like-minded friends, be sure you’ll score! 

But for most people, getting to Cactus Beach is already a mission by itself, so I’ll go ahead and break down the surf spots along this beach so you’ll know where to paddle out. 

Castles: Perfect for Intermediate Surfers

If you’re somewhere between a beginner and a seasoned pro, Castles is your best bet. It’s got a pretty consistent break, especially when the southwest swell rolls in, and the waves aren’t too intimidating for intermediates. That said, don’t get too cocky—it’s not a mellow beach break. The waves can pack some punch, especially on a bigger day. 

Caves: No Beginners Allowed

Serousley, though, is not a spot for beginners or intermediates who are not comfortable with fast, hollow, and big waves breaking over a shallow reef. On the right swell, you can get head to double overhead high barreling waves in here! 

Time your paddle out right to avoid being caught inside on a set, and as always, practice surf etiquette and respect the locals in the water. 

I haven’t surfed this spot as the swell wasn’t big enough for it to break properly. But hearing stories from the locals and seeing theier eyes pop wide open says it all.

Cactus: The Go-To Spot for Beginners 

On the flip side, Cactus is way more beginner-friendly. The waves here are much more forgiving, with softer, slower breaks that are perfect for practicing your pop-up or just getting used to being in the lineup.

It’s a great spot for beginners who want a taste of the Cactus Beach scene without getting thrown into the deep end—literally and figuratively.

Keep in mind, on bigger swells, it can be more challenging for beginners, so be sure to check the forecast before you go. 

Pro Tip: All the spots on this beach are reef breaks. Wearing booties will help protect your feet from cuts and keep you warm for longer in the water. 

Hazards and Safety Considerations

One thing about Cactus Beach that you’ve got to respect is how wild it is. This place isn’t a commercialized surf hub with lifeguards and cafes. You’re on your own out here (well, with other adventure seekers…), so safety is key.

Reefs: As mentioned earlier almost every surf spot at Cactus Beach has some sort of reef to navigate. Keep an eye on the tide and always, always wear booties if you’re unsure. The rocks are sharp, and a misstep can end your session real quick.

Currents: Strong currents are common, especially on windy days. Make sure you’re paddling with purpose, and if you feel yourself getting dragged, don’t fight it—paddle sideways to escape the current. 

Sharks: Look, no one likes to talk about it, but sharks are around. This part of South Australia is known for them, so it’s worth being cautious. Surfing with a buddy and avoiding dawn or dusk sessions is always a good idea. 

At the end of the day,Cactus Beach is about as raw and wild as surfing gets in Australia. If you respect the environment and know your limits, you’re going to have an unforgettable experience.

Just make sure you’re prepared for the elements—and maybe bring a first aid kit for good measure and always have a good travel insurance for when things go south.

Where To Stay At Cactus Beach

When it comes to staying near Cactus Beach, the options are limited. You can either camp at the campground close to the beach. I think it’s about 20 AUD Per Person (Please double-check beforehand because prices might change). 

There is only a drop toilet in this campground, so being self-efficient is a big plus. No shower or drinking water is provided, so make sure you have at least 3-4 liters per person per day for drinking water. 

The other option is to stay in the small town of Penong, where you have a couple of motels and one Caravan Park with more facilities. 

Thing To Do In The Area 

Let’s be real, surfing at Cactus Beach is amazing, but you’re not going to be in the water 24/7. Lucky for you, the surrounding area is packed with unique sights and experiences. So, when the swell dies down or you just need a break, here are some things you can do to soak in the local flavor.

Take Pictures At The Pink Lake

The pink lake is on the way to the beach so you stop and enjoy the beauty of the pink water. The perfect shot would be from a drone capturing bith lakes one blue and the other pink with the road sperating the two. But if you don’t have a drone a simple smartphone would do as well. 

The pink color comes from a species of bacteria that thrives in salty environments. So, generally speaking, the lake might be less colorful after rainy days. 

Visit Point Sincalr Jetty

This spot is on the other side of the penesuila. the bay is protected from waves and has a shrak enclougere. Great for taking the family for a swim withour worrying what might be swimming underneath. 

There’s a picknick spot but shade is limited so having an awning is a big plus. 

Check Out the Local Wildlife

Out here in the wilds of South Australia, the local wildlife is no joke. I’ve spotted kangaroos, emus, and even eagles on the drive to Cactus Beach.

If you’re lucky, you might even see some sea lions or dolphins near the beach, and if you’re really lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you feel about it), you might spot a shark while you’re in the lineup.

Outside of the water, though, keep your camera handy because you’ll run into all kinds of animals.

El Salvador was never on my bucket list, but that changed quickly when I first traveled to Central America, starting in Panama. Hearing about the perfect right-hand point breaks and consistent swell, I knew I had to be there! 

Sure enough, I first arrived in El Tunco Beach, El Salvador, at the beginning of May, just when the wet season started, and gave myself the perfect birthday present: endless right-hand perfect waves. 

In this guide, I’ll highlight the best surf spots in El Salvador, including where to stay and what to do when you need a break from surfing. 

So grab your board, and let’s dive into the waves of this incredible surf destination!

The Best Surf Season In El Salvador

Let’s start with the timing. If you read my content, you know that timing is the most crucial part of planning a surf trip. 

In general, the wet season in Central America is between May and October same as Nicaragua and Costa Rica. This is when the South Pacific Ocean generates big, long-period swells, resulting in waves across El Salvador’s beaches, typically head-height but can reach well overhead. 

The Dry Season, on the other hand, from November to April, brings clear sunny days and consistent waist-to-shoulder-height waves. Some call it the shoulder season. 

I’ve experienced both seasons in Central America; honestly, I’ve never had flat days or felt a lack of waves. In fact, many times I had to take a break to rest my body haha.

Best Surf Breaks In El Salvador

El Salvador’s coast is the secret to all the world-class point breaks this country offers. A series of volcanic eruptions shaped this coast into a wave-producing machine. 

It’s one of the best surfing destinations in Central America and I would argue even in the world, at least for right-hand wave lovers! I mean warm water, coconut trees, and sunshine all day; what else do you need? 

Alright, let’s jump right into it, shall we? 

Punta Roca

Punta Roca is one of Central America’s best surf spots, and arguably, it is the best in the world when it turns on! I mean, it’s a stop on the WSL tour for a reason! 

First off, the wave itself is a beast. We’re talking about a long, fast, and powerful right-hand point break that can peel for what feels like forever. This is definitely not a beginner surf spot. Bring your best game when coming to surf this spot and be ready to paddle, A LOT! 

The wave at Punta Roca starts off with a steep drop, which is already enough to get your adrenaline pumping, but then it just keeps going, offering up section after section to carve, snap, and barrel through.

It works on all tides and on southwesterly swells. However, it gets hollower and really shallow on low tides, so be warned. The bottom is covered in rocks and boulders. 

The best way to get there is to park in La Paz near the restaurants and walk to the point where you’ll see surfers jumping off the rocks to the point. Expect a lot of crowd as this is NOT a secret spot by any means. 

Other tips would be to respect the locals and be patient, as it might be a while before you get a wave (Depending on the crowd and condition), but once you get one, you’re in for a long ride!

Punta Roca is one of those waves that can either make your trip or break your spirit. It’s challenging, but if you’re up for it, the rewards are incredible. 

El Sunzal 

El Sunzal is a picture-perfect right-hand point break located just north of Punta Roca. It offers more gentle breaking waves; that being said, if the swell is big, the waves here are challenging even for the more experienced surfers. 

Depending on the time of the year, the river mouth leading to the famous El Tunco Rock might break into the ocean, making the access to the spot a bit more challenging but nothing too crazy. 

To access the point break, you’ll have to walk to El Tunco Beach and head to the north end. From there, jump into the water and be ready to paddle A LOT. 

Every long ride means a long paddle back out, but don’t let that scare you. It is well worth it! 

El Sunzal is located in a small gated community full of restaurants serving delicious local and international cuisine, as well as plenty of bars and hostels. 

La Bocana 

La Bocana is about 5 min walk from El Sunzal Point Break. It’s located just south of the famous El Tunco Rock. 

This is one of the only spots in El Salvador where you can find a left hand break. To be more precise, it’s a river mouth A-frame wave. The bottom consists of smooth volcanic rocks and sand. 

The wave here is fast and heavy, especially on big swells. On an average day, I find this spot really fun to surf. 

The fact that it’s not a point break but an open, really high-quality beach break means the crowd spreads out a bit more, so you’ll get plenty of waves.

 My strategy was simple: when El Sunzal is packed, I would go to La Bocana and find a wave to myself or with a handful of people around.

El Zonte 

Playa El Zonte is a hidden gem in El Salvador. It offers a serene surf experience away from the crowds. This secluded destination is perfect for surfers looking to escape the hustle and enjoy more intimate sessions.

El Zonte features both beach breaks and a river mouth point, catering to various skill levels. The beach breaks are ideal for playful, mellow rides, while the river mouth can deliver more powerful, challenging waves when the conditions are right.

The vibe is super chill—think early morning surf sessions followed by relaxed afternoons sharing stories with fellow surfers over a cold drink.

Punta Mango

Punta Mango is the ultimate destination for surfers craving an off-the-beaten-path adventure. The fast, barreling right-handers here are what dreams (and sometimes wipeouts) are made of. If you’re looking to push your limits and score some epic rides, Punta Mango is where you want to be.

Getting to Punta Mango is part of the adventure. The spot is pretty remote, and accessing it usually involves a bumpy ride down dirt roads or even a boat trip if you’re up for it.

Because of its isolation, it’s crucial to come prepared. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and any surf gear you might need—there’s no surf shop around the corner here. And don’t forget a first-aid kit; the waves can be gnarly, and a few scrapes are part of the experience.

Surfing here feels almost spiritual, with nothing but the sound of crashing waves and the occasional shout of stoke from a fellow surfer. It’s a raw, pure surfing experience that’s becoming harder to find in today’s crowded lineups.

Where To Stay In El Salvador

There are plenty of options for where to stay in El Salvador; whether you’re looking for a luxury escape or want to share a room with fellow travelers, there’s something for everyone. 

I only recommend places I stayed in or have heard good things about while traveling, and sometimes places I wanted to go but didn’t book in advance, so don’t make my mistakes! 

Keep in mind, I travel for long periods at a time, so it can’t all be luxury stays for me, but I do the experience every now and then. 

The Cabins

Located in La Libertad, just 500 meters from Playa El Sunzal, The Cabins offers cozy, air-conditioned rooms and a year-round outdoor pool. It’s a fantastic spot if you’re looking to be close to the surf with a laid-back atmosphere.

It’s great for couples, families, or groups of friends that wouldn’t mind sharing a room. The place is well looked after and clean. Plus, nothing beats being this close to the surf. 

Puro Surf Hotel

Situated in El Zonte, Puro Surf Hotel is perfect for surfers. It features an infinity pool with ocean views, a lap pool, and a bar. The hotel is just a short walk from the beach, making it easy to catch the waves. 

Perfect for families and couples, the hotel offers babysitting services upon request for those who have little ones and want a break. How great is that!? 

Just for the record I don’t have kids but I bit you if I had I’ll need to go for a surf with an eased mind knowing my babies are taken care of. 

Pelicano Surf Camp

Located right by the beach, it offers easy access to great waves, including both beach breaks and a river mouth point. The camp has a laid-back, community vibe, with options for private rooms or shared dorms. 

They offer surf lessons, board rentals, and guided trips, making it easy to get involved in the local surf scene. Plus, with on-site meals and yoga sessions, it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy Punta Roca without breaking the bank.

What To Do In El Salvador 

Visit Tamanique Waterfalls

Just a 30-40 minute drive from El Tunco Beach, the Tamanique Waterfalls offer a refreshing break from the surf.

A short hike through lush terrain leads you to these stunning cascades, where you can swim in natural pools and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It’s a great way to experience El Salvador’s natural beauty beyond the beaches.

Explore the Ruins of Tazumal 

Located in the town of Chalchuapa, the Tazumal ruins are an archaeological site featuring some of the most well-preserved Mayan structures in El Salvador.

You can wander through the ancient pyramids, learn about Mayan history at the on-site museum, and get a glimpse of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Hike the Santa Ana Volcano 

For adventure seekers, hiking the Santa Ana Volcano is a must. It’s the highest volcano in El Salvador, and the trek to the summit offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape, including the turquoise crater lake.

The hike takes about 4-5 hours round trip and is a great way to experience the country’s volcanic terrain. Unfortunately, we arrived a bit too late in the day, and we had a kid with us who wasn’t allowed to hike the volcano—a thing to keep in mind.

Surf In Portugal: A Year Round Destination

One of the things I love most about Portugal is its consistency when it comes to surf. Unlike some places where you have to wait for the perfect swell, Portugal delivers year round.

But what makes Portugal truly special is its diverse coastline. We’re talking over 800 kilometers of varied landscapes, from the Algarve’s sandy beaches to the western coast’s rugged cliffs. This means there’s a surf spot for everyone, no matter your skill level. 

The people are very welcoming, and the surf culture is so deeply integrated in the country that it feels like it’s their way of life rather than just a sport. 

In fact, Portugal is home to the second World Surfing Reserve- Ericeira.

Getting there is pretty easy, as you have three major airports nationwide. A major airport in Porto (OPO) will get you closer to the northern part of the country, while the major airport in Lisbon (LIS) will get you in the middle of the country, and the big airport in Algarve (FAO) will get you in the south part of Portugal. 

From the airport, it is easy to rent a car or arrange a taxi pickup to your hotel. 

Winter Surf Season In Portugal

Winter in Portugal is when things get serious for surfers. December through February is prime time if you’re looking to test your skills on some of the most powerful waves the Atlantic Ocean offers.

This is the season when Portugal’s reputation as a world-class surf destination really shines, especially for big wave surfers and adrenaline chasers. 

Winter in Portugal brings cooler temperatures and those all-important offshore winds that help shape the waves into perfect, clean lines. The air might be brisk, but the trade-off is worth it—especially since the crowds thin out significantly.

You’ll find that many of the surf spots that are packed in summer are much quieter in winter, giving you more space to really enjoy the waves.

And with the ocean temperature hovering around 14-17°C (57-63°F), a good wetsuit is essential, but it’s nothing that a dedicated surfer isn’t used to.

For advanced surfers looking to score some of the best waves of their lives, winter in Portugal is unbeatable. Spots like Nazaré and Coxos are just the tip of the iceberg.

There are countless breaks along the coast that light up in winter, each offering its own unique challenge. My advice? Keep an eye on the surf forecasts, be prepared for some cold water, and don’t hesitate to explore. 

Spring Surf Season In Portugal

Spring in Portugal is like hitting the sweet spot for surfing. The conditions are just about perfect from March to May, especially if you’re not quite ready to tackle the winter monsters but still want some solid waves.

What I love about spring surfing in Portugal is that it offers the best of both worlds—The conditions are great for intermediate and beginner surfers looking for a challenge.

You’re looking at consistent swells that range from 3 to 6 feet, which is perfect for those who want to work on their technique without getting completely hammered by the surf.

The water’s starting to warm up, too, hovering around 16-18°C (61-64°F), so you can get away with a lighter wetsuit—something around 3/2mm should do the trick. It’s not just the waves that are more forgiving; the weather’s a lot friendlier too. You get those crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, and a cool breeze that makes for comfortable sessions without freezing your toes off.

For intermediate surfers, places like Peniche and Ericeira are goldmines. Peniche, particularly at spots like Supertubos and Baleal, offers a variety of waves that cater to different skill levels.

The crowds are thinner compared to summer, so you’ll have more room to move and less competition for the lineup.

Ericeira is another fantastic option, with breaks like Ribeira d’Ilhas providing long, rideable waves that are perfect for improving your style and flow.

For beginners, spring is an awesome time to get comfortable in the water. Spots like Praia da Rocha in the Algarve or the mellow beach breaks at Costa da Caparica near Lisbon are ideal.

The waves here are forgiving, the vibe is super relaxed, and you’ll find plenty of surf schools still open to help you out.

Summer Surf Season In Portugal

Summer in Portugal is all about sun, surf, and a seriously laid-back vibe. From June to August, the country’s coastline comes alive with small, playful waves and warm waters that make it the perfect season for beginners or those just looking to enjoy some mellow sessions.

The surf might not be as intense as in winter or spring, but that’s part of the charm—summer is the time to kick back, catch some easy waves, and soak in the festive atmosphere that Portugal is famous for.

During summer, the waves in Portugal tend to be smaller, typically ranging from 2 to 4 feet, which is ideal if you’re just starting out or prefer a more relaxed pace in the water.

The warm Atlantic waters can reach up to 20-22°C (68-72°F), meaning you can often ditch the wetsuit and surf in just a rash guard or even board shorts on hotter days.

It’s a great time to work on your basics, like paddling, popping up, and carving out your first turns without the pressure of bigger waves.

But with great weather and surf come the inevitable crowds. Portugal’s beaches can get pretty packed during the summer, especially in popular areas like Ericeira and Peniche.

As the summer crowds start to thin out and the water temperatures remain inviting—usually around 18-20°C (64-68°F)—the Atlantic starts delivering powerful, well-formed waves that are perfect for surfers of all levels. If you’re up for exploring further, Sagres in the Algarve are great autumn destinations. Best Surf Spots In Southern California 

Before we get into it, I will mention the best surf spots in this list according to my experience in SoCal and also discuss the best time to score epic waves. 

Also, in the end, I will give a couple of extra (Less Known) spots, so keep reading! 

Malibu

Surfrider Beach is probably the most famous of all Malibu’s surf spots, and for good reason.

It’s like the ultimate right-hand point break, offering three distinct sections—First, Second, and Third Point. First point is suitable for beginners and longboarders, while the Second and Third points are shorter and faster waves and hence will be more suitable for intermediate-advanced surfers.

You can glide for what feels like miles, hanging ten, and soaking in that quintessential California vibe.

It’s also where you can feel the history under your feet, knowing that legends like Miki Dora once dominated these waves.

On the flip side, though, Surfrider’s popularity means you’ll be sharing those waves with a ton of other surfers. And I mean a ton. It’s like the Disneyland of surf spots—everyone wants a piece of it, which can make things a bit, well, crowded.

Zuma Beach

Zuma Beach has a slightly different vibe from Surfrider’s polished perfection. It is more rugged and exposed and offers a variety of waves depending on where you paddle out.

The waves here can get pretty punchy, especially during a solid swell. I’ve had days at Zuma where the waves are just relentless, one after another, but in the best way possible.

It’s less predictable than Surfrider, and that’s part of the charm. Zuma’s also got a lot more space, so even when it’s crowded, it doesn’t feel as claustrophobic as some of the other spots in Malibu.

Oh, also, get ready to have sand in places you never thought it could reach! 

Huntington Beach

This place isn’t called Surf City USA for nothing. The city has earned this title through decades of being at the forefront of the surfing world. It’s where the sport isn’t just a pastime—it’s a way of life.

Let’s start with the most famous spot—the Huntington Beach Pier. The Pier is the heart of Surf City USA. It’s where the action happens, both in the water and on the shore. 

You’ll find the more consistent breaks on the south side, especially when there’s a south swell. But the north side can also offer some excellent rights on the right day. 

The waves here are versatile, offering something for everyone. On a good day, you can catch anything from a mellow ride to a more challenging, faster wave.

It’s also a great place to people-watch; you’ll see everything from old-school longboarders to groms ripping it up on their shortboards.

Now, if you’re a surf fan, Huntington Beach isn’t just about catching waves—it’s also about watching some of the best surfers in the world go head-to-head. The city hosts several major surf competitions throughout the year, with the most famous being the Vans US Open of Surfing.

Trestles

Located on the border of Orange and San Diego counties, Trestles is more than just a surf spot—it’s a surfer playground.

It’s where you find some of the best waves in the world, where the pros come to test their skills, and where the everyday surfer can experience what it’s like to ride perfection.

What sets Trestles apart is its consistency, quality, and the sheer variety of waves that cater to all kinds of surfers, from seasoned pros to ambitious groms.

Trestles is actually a collection of several different breaks, each with its own personality and charm.

The most famous of these is Lower Trestles, known simply as “Lowers.” This spot is the crown jewel of Trestles, where you’ll find those perfect, glassy A-frame waves that surfers dream about. Lowers is a high-performance wave—fast, punchy, and just the right size for pulling off big maneuvers. It’s the go-to spot for pro contests like the WSL’s Rip Curl WSL Finals, and for good reason.

Just a short walk up the beach is Upper Trestles, or “Uppers.” While Lowers tends to attract more of the high-performance shortboard crowd, Uppers has a bit of a different vibe. The waves here are a bit softer and more forgiving, making it a popular spot for longboarders and surfers looking for a more relaxed session.

The right-handers at Uppers are super fun and offer long rides that let you really get into the flow of the wave. It’s a great spot if you’re looking to avoid the intensity of Lowers but still want to score some quality waves.

Then there’s Middle Trestles, the often-overlooked sibling in the Trestles family. Located between Uppers and Lowers, Middle Trestles is like the middle child—sometimes overshadowed, but still offering some excellent waves when the conditions line up. And I’m not saying that just because I’m a middle child! 

Black’s Beach

Located beneath the towering cliffs of Torrey Pines, Black’s is famous for its powerful, often hollow waves that break over a submarine canyon.

This spot is definitely not for the faint of heart—when it’s big, it can get seriously heavy. It’s the first and ONLY place so far I’ve surfed when it was EPIC on Surfline’s forecast. 

The paddle out was challenging, and the lineup was competitive, but the payoff was worth it.

On a good day, the waves at Black’s are some of the best you’ll find not just in San Diego, but in all of California. It’s a spot that demands respect, both for the waves and the local crew who’ve been surfing here for years.

If you’re up for it, though, it’s an experience you won’t forget. Just be prepared for a long hike down to the beach and a potentially even longer paddle back out.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach, or OB as the locals call it, offers a bit of everything and is one of San Diego’s most iconic surf spots. The OB Pier creates some nice lefts and rights, with the waves ranging from fun and cruisy to downright challenging depending on the swell.

OB is known for its eclectic, laid-back vibe—it’s a place where everyone’s welcome, from longboarders to shortboarders, beginners to pros.

The waves here are super fun, and there’s always something to ride, whether you’re looking for a mellow session or a chance to push your limits.

Plus, after your session, you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many nearby spots—OB has some killer tacos, just saying.

When To Go Surfing In SoCal 

The best time to surf in Southern California will depend on what type of waves your looking for, but generally, the region delivers solid waves year-round.

For beginners, summer (June to August) is ideal with smaller, more manageable swells, warm water, and mellow conditions, particularly at spots like Malibu and La Jolla Shores.

However, if you’re chasing bigger waves, fall (September to November) is the sweet spot. During this time, the south swells from the Pacific mix with the first northwest swells, producing consistent, quality waves with less crowded lineups.

Winter (December to February) is when the bigger, more powerful northwest swells hit, especially at breaks like Trestles and Black’s Beach. This season is better suited for experienced surfers due to the size and intensity of the waves, and the water’s definitely chillier.

Spring (March to May) offers a mix of conditions, with fewer crowds and a blend of leftover winter swells and early summer energy.

You Might Want To Check Out These Spots 

As promised, here are some more surf spots in southern California you might want to check out on your next trip. While these are not secret spots by any means, they do get fewer crowds than other popular spots in the area. 

El Porto

El Porto is located a bit north of the more famous Manhattan Beach. This was the first beach I surfed in SoCal, as it was the closest one to me at the time. 

Coming from the highway to the intersection where you start seeing the ocean, I saw a group of dolphins jumping and swimming, I already knew it will be a great surf session. 

El Porto is a beach break, meaning the sand is constantly moving, and the wave quality changes with that. Generally speaking, the waves are pretty consistent. While it’s not one of the best beaches in California, it has a special place in my heart, and I think it’s worth a stop. 

Rincon Point

It’s technically not a secret, but it’s not as crowded as spots like Trestles. Rincon is up near Ventura, and it’s often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors.

Rincon has these long, long right-handers that just keep going. And going. On a good day, you can ride one wave for what feels like forever.

It’s one of those places where you’ll find yourself grinning ear to ear after every ride. But here’s the kicker—it can get really crowded when the word gets out that it’s firing.

Topanga Beach 

Or, as I used to call it, Mini Malibu. Topanga is located between Malibu and Santa Monica. Whenever I didn’t feel like driving all the way to Malibu, I surfed Topanga. 

Just like Malibu, Topanga has a rocky/sandy bottom and a long, slow-breaking right-hander. Also, just in front of the small creek, there’s a quicker wave that, on a good day, connects to the long point break. 

Just like First and Second Point in Malibu, it’s basically a replica of Malibu but without the crowds, haha. Check it out!

As a beginner, you’re looking for gentle waves, a sandy bottom, and possibly a lifeguard on duty because you can never be too safe. 

With approx 11,761 recorded beaches in Australia, finding these desirable spots is not an easy task. Luckily for you, I’ve spent the past year driving through Australia’s coastline and picked my favorite beginner-friendly spots on this list. 

Just a DISCLIMAR here: I’m not a beginner, but I’ve been one, for quite a long time I would add haha. 

Alright, enough talking. Grab a pen and paper (or at least a digital version), and let’s explore the best beginner surfing spots in Australia. 

1. Bondi Beach, New South Wales

The iconic Bondi Beach is the very first beach I visited in Australia. I landed in Sydney at night, woke up, took a bus, and went straight to Bondi.

Getting there was fairly easy with public transport, and there are plenty of car parks if you’re driving. Although it gets packed, you can either arrive early or park somewhere else and walk to the beach.  

As I didn’t have a surfboard yet, I rented one from Let’s Go Surfing for about 30 AUD for 2 hours. It was really convenient because the surf shop is a couple of steps away from the beginner-friendly section of the beach (North Bondi). 

The wave itself is gentle and slow-breaking, especially when it’s not too big. This makes it perfect for beginners as it’s not too fast and hollow. Going further south along the beach would make it a bit challenging for those who are just starting out. 

Bondi Beach is considered to be one of the best surf spots in Australia, not only for beginners. So, don’t expect it to be empty. In fact, most of the time, it is pretty crowded. 

2. Noosa Heads, Queensland

Noosa Heads is a picture-perfect point break located in the northern part of Queensland, just a 40-minute drive from the Sunshine Coast or 2.5-3 hours from Brisbane.

Main Beach is where most beginners start, and for good reason. The waves here are super long and forgiving, which is ideal when you’re learning to balance and control your board. 

And because the waves are so mellow, you get plenty of time to practice your pop-up, adjust your stance, and just enjoy the ride.

Little Cove is another great beginner-friendly spot in Noosa. It’s just the next little bay from Main Beach when going to the National Park. It’s tucked away a bit more, giving it this peaceful vibe.

The waves at Little Cove are perfect for longboarding. They break slowly and peel beautifully along the shore, giving you plenty of time to practice turning and maneuvering your board.

One thing to keep in mind about Noosa is that it can get pretty crowded, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Everyone wants a piece of those perfect waves, so if you’re like me and prefer a bit more space, try to go early in the morning or on weekdays. That’s when you’ll find the most relaxed conditions and fewer people in the water. 

3. Byron Bay, New South Wales

Byron Bay offers several beginner surf breaks with consistent, mellow waves and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The Pass is one of the top spots, offering long, gentle waves that are perfect for practicing your balance and timing. It’s a bit of a crowd magnet, but the vibe is always friendly, with plenty of fellow learners cheering each other on.

Wategos Beach is another beginner-friendly spot. It’s known for its small, smooth waves, which are ideal for beginners. It’s less crowded than The Pass, making it a great place to get some quality wave time without feeling rushed.

Byron Bay is also home to numerous surf camps and schools, making it easy to find lessons tailored to your skill level. I

The town itself is full of chilled-out cafes and surf shops, creating a surfer-friendly atmosphere that’s hard to resist. If you’re driving, get ready to spend some money on parking. 

If you don’t mind the walk, I recommend parking in town and walking to The Pass. There are limited amount of free parking spots, just make sure you move your car on time! 

4. Torquay, Victoria

Torquay, Victoria, marks the start of the famous Great Ocean Road, where you can visit some of the best surf beaches in Australia. Torquay is rich in surf history and known as the birthplace of Australian surf culture. 

For beginners, Cosy Corner and Torquay Front Beach are top spots. Cosy Corner offers gentle waves sheltered by the Point Danger headland, making it a great spot to practice without getting overwhelmed. The perfect place to learn how to surf! 

Torquay Front Beach is another beginner-friendly option. Its long, rolling waves provide plenty of opportunities to hone your skills.

Torquay’s surf culture runs deep, with the Surf World Museum showcasing its history and iconic brands like Rip Curl and Quiksilver starting here. The town is filled with surf shops where you can pick up beginner gear—think soft-top boards and wetsuits suited to the local conditions.

Whether you’re gearing up for your first lesson or exploring the local surf history, Torquay is a fantastic place to start your surfing adventure along the Great Ocean Road.

Also, if you’re lucky enough to be there between late March and early April, you might catch the pros ripping it in Bells Beach on the WSL tour. 

5. Crescent Head, New South Wales

Crescent Head, New South Wales, is a hidden gem for beginner surfers looking to escape the crowded, well-known spots. This charming coastal town offers long, mellow waves that are perfect for learning, making it a dream spot for beginners.

The point break at Crescent Head is famous for its easy-going waves that peel slowly along the shore, giving you plenty of time to pop up and ride.

It’s one of those spots where you can catch wave after wave without the pressure of big swells or aggressive crowds. The gentle surf here makes it ideal for practicing your stance, balance, and turns—whether you’re on a longboard or just starting with a soft top.

Public transport makes getting to Manly Beach a breeze—just hop on the ferry from Circular Quay, and you’ll be there in about 30 minutes. Once you arrive, the beach is just a short walk away, with plenty of cafes and shops to explore along the way.

7. Scarborough Beach, Western Australia

The wave conditions at Scarborough are typically gentle; the only time of year when Scarbrough turns into a beast of a wave is winter time and on big swells.

Throughout the year, the beach is ideal for beginners to paddle out and practice catching waves without the intensity of stronger swells. 

Finding surf lessons at Scarborough is easy, with several surf schools offering beginner classes throughout the week.

If you don’t have your own gear, no worries—there are plenty of rental shops nearby where you can grab a soft-top board and wetsuit for the day.

Scarborough Beach is also known for its vibrant beach culture. The area is packed with facilities, including cafes, restaurants, and picnic areas, making it a great place to spend the day.

What makes for the perfect surfboard travel bag? With so many options on the shelf, this question is a bit hard to answer. But I’ll break down the process that I go through when choosing my next surf bag. 

Durability

The most important board bag feature is, by far, durability. It’s going to be tossed around in the airport, stuffed into car trunks, and maybe even strapped to the top of a bus or two.

Look for materials like high-density polyester or heavy-duty nylon. These are built to withstand the wear and tear of travel.

Padding

A good surfboard bag has plenty of padding to protect your board from dings and cracks. Some bags come with extra-thick padding around the nose and tail, which is where your board is most vulnerable.

Trust me, the extra cushion is worth it. On that note, I ALWAYS suggest stuffing extra padding like bubble wrap and foam to keep your board safe. 

Storage Compartments

This is straightforward. Does it have any storage compartments for other surf accessories, such as leashes, wax, and fins? 

Most have at least one zipper compartment for your surf accessories, but some have much more storage space. 

Size And Weight

As for the size of your board bag, consider buying one a few inches bigger than your surfboard. If you have a 5’11” surfboard, consider buying a 6’0”/ 6’1” board bag.

This one’s a game-changer—use your wetsuits, towels, and clothes as extra padding around your boards. Not only does this save space, but it also adds another layer of protection.

So open your Atlas (Ok, Google Maps…) and get ready to pin down your next surf travel adventure! 

1- Bali, Indonesia

Have you ever looked at your social media and seen these perfect A-frame barrels, a black sand beach, and coconut trees in the background? Well, that’s probably Bali, Indonesia. 

Now I know what you think, it’s probably not always dreamy and hard to get this dreamy day, but let me tell you, one of the most consistent surf spots is in Bali.  

Yes, it gets crowded, and often, catching the set waves requires a lot of hassle and time spent in the lineup, but it’s worth it! 

Now, let’s talk timing. Bali has two seasons—dry (April to October) and wet (November to March). Most people will tell you the dry season is the best time to surf, and they’re not wrong. The winds are offshore, which makes for some killer waves.

But here’s a little secret: the wet season can be amazing, too. Yeah, you might get rained on, but the crowds are smaller, and you can score some epic swells.

Spots like Padang Padang and Uluwatu will challenge even the most experienced surfers. I remember watching some action from the cliff; I got really anxious without even getting wet, haha. 

For more forgiving spots, try Kuta Beach or Inside Padang Padang.

Alright, I can talk endlessly about Bali, but that’s for another post; let’s continue. 

2- Gold Coast, Australia

The Gold Coast has always been on my bucket list. Watching these endless lines coming through the bay in short films and YouTube videos is nothing compared to seeing them in real life. It’s easily one of the best waves in Australia.

Here’s the thing about the Gold Coast, though: it’s not always perfect. The famous spot Kirra doesn’t break too often. 

But I think that’s the beauty of it. It’s almost as if it’s a mystical wave. Seeing it in real life is like watching a volcano erupt or a hurricane hit. Alright, maybe I’m exaggerating, but you get what I mean, no? 

The whole stretch of coast is called the Super Bank, from Snapper Rocks down to Kirra. It’s partly man-made, due to pumping sand from the Tweed River into the ocean. 

The main break is Snapper Rocks, a back-washy wave that breaks right behind the rocks and continues to break over the sandy bottom. It’s not an easy spot, and the locals are relentless. 

But because of the amount of waves and the long stretch of sand, everyone can find a corner to tuck into. 

For beginners, I suggest surfing Kirra when it’s not pumping or a bit further up the beach. 

3- North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

The North Shore of Oahu is where surf dreams and legends come to life. This place is iconic, home to world-famous breaks like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay.

It’s literally the birthplace of surfing, and surfers from around the world come here to test their skills. It’s a really magical place that I hope to visit and experience firsthand one day. 

Remember, these waves demand respect and skill, making the North Shore a proving ground for surfers worldwide.

But the North Shore isn’t just for pros. Spots like Turtle Bay and Pua’ena Point offer more mellow waves, perfect for beginners or those looking to enjoy the iconic North Shore vibe without the intensity.

If you visit, remember to respect the waves, the locals, and the culture. This is more than just a surf spot; it’s a sacred place for the surfing community.

4- Hossegor, France

Hossegor is the crown jewel of European surfing, and for good reason. Located on France’s southwest coast, it is known for its world-class beach breaks, which attract surfers from all over the globe.

The waves here are fast and hollow and can get seriously heavy, especially during the fall/ winter when the Atlantic swells roll in.

If you’re chasing barrels, La Gravière is the spot (don’t ask me how to pronounce that). This wave is famous for its thick, powerful sand bottom tubes. 

But don’t expect to rock up at any given time and score epic waves, tides and sand beds play a huge role in the making of this wave. It can make a difference between the session of your life and a back-washy wetsuit full of sand session.

If you’re a beginner or intermediate, try Les Culs Nus or La Nord for a more forgiving experience. 

5- Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa

Jeffreys Bay, or J-Bay, is a dream come true for anyone who loves surfing perfect right-hand point breaks. Nestled on the southeastern coast of South Africa, J-Bay is legendary for its long, fast, and flawlessly peeling waves.

If you watch the WSL, this is where the famous shark attack on the pro surfer Mick Fanning happened. South Africa is known for its shark attacks, but that won’t stop a bunch of surf enthusiasts from catching the wave of their lives at J-Bay!

Supertubes is the crown jewel here, offering rides that can go on for hundreds of meters, giving you plenty of time to carve, tuck into barrels, and just enjoy the thrill. 

Watching the pros do it might seem easy, but don’t let them fool you. It requires a lot of technique. The wave is fast, hollow in some sections, and unforgiving, especially when it’s on the bigger side. 

But it’s definitely a wave worth checking off your bucket list of dreamy waves! 

6- Taghazout, Morocco

Taghazout is a charming fishing village that has transformed into a surf haven over the years. It offers consistent waves, a laid-back vibe, and an exotic and accessible experience.

The most famous spot here is Anchor Point, known for its long, right-hand point break that can run for what feels like forever on a good day.

But Taghazout isn’t just about Anchor Point. There are other breaks nearby, like Killer Point, which offers steeper, more powerful waves, and Panorama Beach, a great spot for beginners or those looking for something a bit more mellow. 

The surf scene here is growing every year. More and more people are coming to Morocco just to surf.

The town itself has a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with surf camps, cafes serving up delicious tagines and friendly locals who are always up for a chat

7- Malibu, California

Malibu is one of the most iconic waves in the world, mainly because of its history in the surfing world. On any given day, it’s a picture-perfect right-hand point break dominated by longboarders and HEAVILY crowded, I mean really crowded! 

The wave is divided into three sections. The First point is the inside wave, which is mellow and slow-breaking. That’s where you’ll find most of the longboards and mid-lengths hanging out. 

The second & Third points are faster, sometimes hollower waves that are more suitable for shortboards. That being said, on good days, these points may link up and perform possibly the best ride of your life. 

But don’t expect to get these rides to yourself; you know what, why talk about it when you can see it for yourself. In fact, most of the Southern California beaches are crowded, but Malibu is a whole different level.

8- Ericira, Portugal

Ericeira is a true gem on Portugal’s west coast, known as Europe’s first and only World Surfing Reserve. Just 40-minute drive from Lisbon, this charming fishing village has become a mecca for surfers, offering a variety of waves that cater to all skill levels. 

From powerful reef breaks to playful beach breaks, Ericeira has it all, with a backdrop of stunning cliffs and the vibrant blue Atlantic.

Ericira holds a special place in my heart because it was my first-ever solo surfing trip. I was definitely out of my level. Coming from surfing the Mediterranean waves into the big, powerful ocean swells was like a slap on the face with a pack of ice! Nevertheless, it was AMAZING! 

One of the standout spots here is Ribeira d’Ilhas, a long, right-hand point break that’s as consistent as it is fun. 

Spots like Coxos and Pedra Branca offer more challenging, heavier waves for those looking to push their limits. And if you’re just starting out, Foz do Lizandro is a great beach break with a friendly vibe and plenty of space to practice. 

9- El Salvador, Central America

El Salvador, the land of the rights! this small country in Central America was previously known for its high crime and murder rate until the present president, Bukele, “cleaned” the streets to make it the safest country in the western Hemisphere. 

As for the waves, it has always been a dreamy place for regular footers. The way the mountains and land meet the specific ocean makes it the perfect place for plenty of right-hand point breaks that are perfect for any level. 

Surf City is the place to be if you’re going there for the surf. I stayed in a small town called El Tunco. There are plenty of local restaurants, bars, and cafes to choose from, plus a point break and a beach break are just a minute’s walk from your hotel. 

Other point breaks worth checking are El Sounzal and Punta Roca, which are probably the most famous waves in El Salvador. 

Oh, make sure you try a Popusa while you’re there. It’s delicious! 

10- Sardegna, Italy

Sardegna, or Sardinia as it’s known in English, might not be the first place you think of when it comes to surfing, but this Mediterranean island is full of surprises.

The Island’s West Coast is where you’ll find the best breaks and arguably the best spots to surf in the Med. But beware: in the Mediterranean, nothing is promised. When it’s pumping, do your best to take advantage of it because, most likely, it won’t last for long. 

The most famous surf spot here is Capo Mannu, a powerful point break that can deliver long, clean waves on the right swell. 

I remember exploring the coast without a surfboard. I drove about three hours to Capo Mannu because I knew it would be protected from the big swell that was rolling in. 

When I finally arrived, I saw it pumping, but I had no surfboard!

Until a random guy appeared with a pickup truck full of surfboards. Apparently, he had a surf school in the area, and he was kind enough to rent me one of his boards and a wetsuit! 

The water was FREEZING, but I had a beautiful session and a magical surf story to tell.

11- Peniche, Portugal

Peniche, Portugal, is often referred to as the surf capital of Europe, and it’s easy to see why. This small coastal town offers some of the most consistent and diverse waves on the continent, making it a hotspot for surfers of all levels. 

The most famous wave here is Supertubos, known as the “European Pipeline” for its fast, hollow barrels. Surfing Supertubos is an adrenaline rush like no other.

I remember my first time seeing this wave in person, i got lucky enough to watch the WSL tour live! Pros like Gabeirl Medina and Jhon Jhon Florence were absolutely rippin! 

Supertubos is best suited for experienced surfers, but there are plenty of other spots around Peniche for those looking for something a bit more forgiving.

Just a short drive away is Baleal Beach, which offers a range of beach breaks that are perfect for beginners and intermediates. The further down the coast you go, the bigger the waves get. It’s like a buffet of waves haha! 

12- Margeret River, Australia

Marger River area is one of the most consistent surf spots in Australia. It’s a popular surfing destination for all levels but some spots are pros only. 

The most iconic wave in Margaret River is at Surfers Point, where you’ll find heavy, often hollow waves that test even the most seasoned surfers. The raw power of the Indian Ocean is on full display here, especially during the winter months when the swells can get massive.

I remember paddling out on a solid day at Surfers Point—feeling the energy of the waves was both intimidating and exhilarating.

It’s a wave that commands respect, but when you’re in the right spot, it’s one of the most rewarding rides you’ll ever have.

For those looking for something a bit less intense, there’s Main Break, offering slightly more forgiving waves that are still fun and challenging. And if you’re new to the sport, spots like Redgate and Huzzas provide gentler, more beginner-friendly waves with stunning coastal views.

Also, make sure you check one of the many winires in the area, nothing is better than finishing a surfing day with a glass of wine overlooking the hills. 

13- Weligama, Sri Lanka 

Weligama, Sri Lanka, is a dream come true for beginner surfers. This laid-back beach town on the southern coast of the island is known for its long, sandy beach and gentle, rolling waves that are ideal for those just starting out.

But even if you’re more experienced, Weligama has a charm that’s hard to resist, with its warm waters, friendly locals, and vibrant surf culture.

The main surf spot in Weligama is right off the beach, where you’ll find soft, forgiving waves that are perfect for learning the basics. The water is warm, and the waves are consistent, which means you’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice your pop-ups and turns without worrying about getting pounded by heavy surf. 

For those looking to step it up a bit, nearby spots like Midigama and Mirissa offer more challenging waves, from fun reef breaks to more powerful swells. These spots are just a short tuk-tuk ride away, making it easy to explore different breaks and find the wave that’s just right for your level.

14- Noosa, Australia 

Noosa, located on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, is often considered the holy grail for longboarders. With its perfect point breaks, warm water, and stunning natural beauty, Noosa offers a surf experience that’s both laid-back and exhilarating.

The main surf spot here is First Point, where the waves peel slowly and beautifully, offering long, clean rides that are perfect for stylish turns and noserides.

The first time I surfed Noosa, it felt like stepping into a postcard. The waves were mellow yet perfectly shaped, ideal for cruising down the line and soaking in the view of the lush headlands.

The second time though, was a tayphoon swell, and let me tell you Noosa shows its real potential on these swells. The mellow slow breaking waves turned into hollow fast peeling ones. 

Noosa is also home to a number of other great breaks, like Tea Tree Bay and Granite Bay, each offering something a little different depending on the swell and tide.

The area is part of Noosa National Park, so the surroundings are pristine, with plenty of wildlife and walking trails to explore when you’re not in the water. 

If you decide to visit please keep it clean and respect the wildlife. Oh and look up ocassionly you might see a Koala checking the waves from above! 

15- Nicaragua, Central America

Nicaragua is fast becoming a favorite destination for surfers seeking consistent waves, uncrowded lineups, and a touch of adventure.

This Central American country boasts a Pacific coastline that offers a variety of breaks, from powerful reefs to fun beach breaks, all set against a backdrop of stunning tropical landscapes. 

One of the most popular spots in Nicaragua is Playa Maderas, known for its reliable, punchy waves that work on almost any tide. It’s a great spot for intermediate surfers, but there are also smaller, more forgiving waves on the inside for beginners.

For those looking for something more intense, Popoyo is the place to be. This reef break offers hollow, powerful waves that can get seriously heavy on a good swell.

Surfing Popoyo is a rush—you need to be confident in your skills, but if you’re up for the challenge, it’s one of the most rewarding waves in the region. Things like river crossing, strong currents and shallow reef are a daily hassle when surfing Popoyo. 

The local surf community is friendly and welcoming, and there’s a real sense of camaraderie in the water. It’s all about the simple life. 

One of the best things about surfing in Nicaragua is the offshores—thanks to Lake Nicaragua’s unique geography, the winds blow offshore almost all day, the claim is 300 days in a year. 

While that might sound dreamy, these offshore can get pretty tough sometimes especially in April. And let me tell you, trying to catch a wave with strong offshore is no fun.
